  • The Friday market is filled with stalls offering inexpensive clothes, gadgets and accessories (such as headphones, cases for phones and the like) and lots and lots and lots of food! Cheese, fish, meat ... Would want to buy everything! All in the beautiful surroundings of the square, really cute.

  • Many times throughout the history of Ghent on this beautiful square his fate was being decided. It's called "Friday market" (Dutch-Vrijdagmarkt) for one simple reason: every Friday here unfolds a colorful market. This area witnessed many events and battles. It is on the Friday market in the year 1340 by King Edward II was recognized as King of France guilds under the leadership of Jacob van Artevelde, whose statue is now occupied a central place in the market. This step was an attempt to keep close trade the Ghent relations with England, since local production of wool was highly dependent on imports of raw materials from this source. Revolt of the inhabitants of Ghent against the French Crown did Jacob van Artevelde national hero. And who could have predicted that in a few years he will be killed by the same people whose interests he was trying to protect. And all because Edward thought to fulfil their solemn promises. With Friday's market Jacob van Artevelde from 1863 onwards indicates towards England, country, raise it to the top and which led to his death.
