Ghent City Center, Ghent

#1 of 143 in Things to do in Ghent
Landmark Tourist Spot
Guildhalls along a small canal make Ghent City Center a favorite stopping place for tourists. The city isn't included in many guided tours of Belgium and maintains the feel of a local, undiscovered destination. In the center you have your choice of restaurants and bars with views of stunning architecture and the river. Tour at your leisure the central Belfort en Lakenhalle, or the "Belfry and Cloth Hall," as well as the cathedral where Charles V was baptized. Consider a walking tour through the narrow streets and across the canal bridges to gain a fuller appreciation of this historic center. Where to stay in Ghent

One of Belgium's main cities, Ghent offers a good variety of places to stay. Because of its proximity to the capital city of Brussels and the city of Bruges, Ghent has fewer options than one might expect for a city of its size. Locals recommend booking a room in advance. The city has options for travelers on any budget, from inexpensive hostels to pricier hotels, with most visitors choosing to stay within the historical center. Prices drop slightly as you move away from the Old Town.

  • Very nice town. Very eco friendly with no private vehicles in center. Just Bus or bicycles. Very nice terraces full with people.  more »
  • People rave about Brugge. Go and visit Gent !!! Beautiful city but also first student city in Belgium, meaning a great combination !! The city center is adorable. Architecture, history, plenty of rest...  more »
  • It was definitely worth taking a boat trip on the river, reasonably priced - around 7 Euros for an hour. The tour guides were good humoured and informative.  more »
