  • This church is very pretty and especially not so crowded. If you run direction Beguinage of the Castle, you will pass it. There are beautiful statues of Saints and beautiful wood carvings. The door, the pulpit and the altar table is particularly beautiful.

  • It is that "h" between "Carmelite" and charm", these two words merge in the beautiful church of the Discalced (Carmelites) in Ghent. Back from the Burgstraat, the severe façade of Regency surmounted with a modest steeple suggests not an interior bright and conducive to meditation. Unlike most historic churches who accumulate transformations and objects of eras and styles sometimes very different, it is in its perfect unity since its construction in the early 18th century. The panelling are a wonder of "popular" baroque with inset saints and allegories overcoming eight confessionals. The austere façade of the convent and her small door let not become the huge garden with trees centuries and which was for more than a century "the Lions enclosure" (Leeuwenhof) of a Palace disappeared. It is a rest of the area where Charles Quint was born and where he had brought back from Tunis five lions Albert Dürer made in 1521 a few famous drawings. Here, the roars are silent in 1641 and Carmelites are today well rooms available to those who enjoy the unexpected calm of this exceptional place that still breathes the Spain, close to the castle of the counts of Flanders. Being one of the last monasteries inhabited and active in Ghent (with the lean-to on the poor clear), the host must get there early but for little it respects the precious silence, it has complete freedom of movement.

  • A very neat Church. Of scultptures wooden really ectra-ordinary! An island of silence in the city. When we close the eyes can still feel the atmosphere of the time that the brothers were here with their religious songs.

Where to stay in Ghent

One of Belgium's main cities, Ghent offers a good variety of places to stay. Because of its proximity to the capital city of Brussels and the city of Bruges, Ghent has fewer options than one might expect for a city of its size. Locals recommend booking a room in advance. The city has options for travelers on any budget, from inexpensive hostels to pricier hotels, with most visitors choosing to stay within the historical center. Prices drop slightly as you move away from the Old Town.
