  • The Church of the Carmelite fathers is one of the largest churches of Ghent and probably the largest baroque church in the city. Built by the religious group, the breakaway during the Kontrreformy from the karmelitskoj community, which is much more modest Caermersklooster monastic complex in Patershole.

  • Carmelite klosterets Church in Ghent has the full name: "Kloosterkerk van de Karmelieten Ongeschoeide". In 1651, the Carmelite monks arrived to Ghent and settled here. In 1668 began construction of the monks of the order Church, but construction went slowly in the beginning, first from 1702 there was more going on in arbejet, which was completed in 1712. However, the first church was inaugurated two years later. Seen from the outside, one can get a bit confused when trying to determine which style church is built in. It's not really Baroque, there is the Church for simple, but at the same time, the Church has a Baroque church of curving lines. The answer is that it is Baroque that is influenced by classicism. In 1797 the monastery and the Church was occupied by the French troops. Although the Church was reopened in 1801, the monastery was not put into use again, only a few years in the 1840s detained monks here. Inside the Church is a three-aisled Basilica. Impressive is the nice high altar in wood and marble. The altar painting "the protection of St. Joseph" is by Victor Janssens, and of painting visible shapes of the father who wander on clouds (or is it Saint Christophorus??) with the Christ Child on her arm. Holy Spirit Dove hovers over them. In the Church is seen by Gaspar de Crayer paintings and one should also notice the great door in carved wood under the organ. This door opens only in Jubilee. If you are interested in to view churches, is a visit to this church is very recommendable.

  • You should really come true or to search, as it is located outside the "beaten track". The Church, however, is a gem-like from a film set. Must see!
