Belfry and Cloth Hall (Belfort en Lakenhalle), Ghent

4.5
#6 of 141 in Things to do in Ghent
Enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the upper level of the Gothic belfry at Belfry and Cloth Hall (Belfort en Lakenhalle). As you ascend, you'll pass through different levels, each with its own theme connected to the city's history from the early 14th century onwards. Spend some time exploring hall's exterior, too, which is covered in statuary depicting stories of the people of Ghent, such as a young girl feeding her prisoner father. The hall serves as a perfect introduction to the city, and its central location makes it a popular first stop if you've just arrived. The entry fee is small, and visitors under 25 get a reduced ticket price. Make Belfry and Cloth Hall (Belfort en Lakenhalle) a part of your Ghent vacation plans using our Ghent tour planning site .

What a interesting, fascinating museum. You walk up 55 steps to the 1st floor of the tower which houses the previous dragon which stands on the top of the spire of the tower and a replica of the Tower...  more »

Impossible to move to Ghent without visiting this beautiful belfry and ride (walk if your condition allows, otherwise there is a lift) all upstairs to see Ghent from above. The visit of the carillon is also very friendly. Each floor a small exhibition that allows you to blow.

Where to stay in Ghent

One of Belgium's main cities, Ghent offers a good variety of places to stay. Because of its proximity to the capital city of Brussels and the city of Bruges, Ghent has fewer options than one might expect for a city of its size. Locals recommend booking a room in advance. The city has options for travelers on any budget, from inexpensive hostels to pricier hotels, with most visitors choosing to stay within the historical center. Prices drop slightly as you move away from the Old Town.
