Abbaye d'Orval, Florenvill

#4 of 19 in Sightseeing in Luxembourg Province
Ruin Tourist Spot
Orval Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132 in the Gaume region of Belgium and is located in Villers-devant-Orval, part of Florenville in the province of Luxembourg. The abbey is well known for its history and spiritual life but also for its local production of the Trappist beer Orval and a specific cheese.HistoryFirst foundationThe site has been occupied since the Merovingian period, and there is evidence that there was already a chapel here in the 10th century. In 1070, a group of Benedictine monks from Calabria settled here, at the invitation of Arnould, Count of Chiny, and began construction of a church and a monastery, but after some forty years, possibly because of the death of Count Arnould, they moved away again. They were replaced by a community of Canons Regular, who completed the construction work: the abbey church was consecrated on 30 September 1124.In 1132, a group of Cistercian monks from Trois-Fontaines Abbey in Champagne arrived, and the two groups formed a single community within the Cistercian Order, under the first abbot, Constantin.

  • There's a visit to the ruins and a little story about the manufacture of beer. Make cheese. There is a discount for seniors (over 60 years) and students. The place is beautiful. Outside the boutique sells cups of Orval. There is a restaurant that serves beer orval and prepares dishes with Abbey cheese. The visit is worth it.

  • Great ruins and a beautiful garden, a nice restaurant and tasting center, we had sandwiches and both a draft and a bottle, yes there's a difference! The bottles are aged and the tap is fresh.  more »
  • Very nice abbey. Spent approximately 2 hours here walking the grounds covered with information boards along the way. Take the opportunity to buy Orval beer and cheese straight from the origin.
  • Driving the countryside arriving to the Abbaye itself is worth the trip. Many locals can be seen arriving to the brewery exchanging cases of empty bottles for fresh brew. The people there are friendly and helpful, lots of experience with visitors. The cheese and beer is great, enough said.
  • Magnificent! Words don't describe easily the feelings of peace, history, war and torment! Human all too human 😘❤ "Quel Val d'Or l'Orval!"
