Trip Planner: Europe / Belgium / Wallonia / The Ardennes / Luxembourg Province / Florenvill / Abbaye d'Orval
Orval Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132 in the Gaume region of Belgium and is located in Villers-devant-Orval, part of Florenville in the province of Luxembourg. The abbey is well known for its history and spiritual life but also for its local production of the Trappist beer Orval and a specific cheese.HistoryFirst foundationThe site has been occupied since the Merovingian period, and there is evidence that there was already a chapel here in the 10th century. In 1070, a group of Benedictine monks from Calabria settled here, at the invitation of Arnould, Count of Chiny, and began construction of a church and a monastery, but after some forty years, possibly because of the death of Count Arnould, they moved away again. They were replaced by a community of Canons Regular, who completed the construction work: the abbey church was consecrated on 30 September 1124.In 1132, a group of Cistercian monks from Trois-Fontaines Abbey in Champagne arrived, and the two groups formed a single community within the Cistercian Order, under the first abbot, Constantin.Add Abbaye d'Orval to your Florenvill travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Florenvill online itinerary maker .

Abbaye d'Orval Reviews
Als je in de buurt bent zeker een bezoek waard. Er is een bewijzerde route. Zeker het museum is leuk. Neem een uurtje en dan ben je vlot rond. De tuin kan je niet bezoeken van hieruit dat was zeker ni... more »If you're in the area well worth a visit. There is a marked out route. Sure the museum is fun. Take an hour and then you smoothly around. The Garden can't you visit from here that was certainly not clear. VW €6 pay and €3 children. No free taster that did have liked.
Mathilde koningin van België was er ook maar het was volgens de overlevering de tante van Godfried van Bouillon, Mathilde van Toscane die aan de oorsprong ligt van de naamgeving en van de abdij. De ro... more »Mathilde Queen of Belgium was there also but it was according to tradition the aunt of Godfrey of Bouillon, Mathilde of Tuscany that is at the origin of the naming of the Abbey. The guided tour of the ruins is impressive, the adjoining new part is obviously not accessible, but does something overwhelming with its Art Deco elements. To meditation, worship or motherly confidences you come when you're in the adjoining Tavern a Orval Trappist order minimum 1 year old. The ' Guardian Angel ' than just your taste buds.
très belle journée passée a l'abbaye avec achat de fromage et de bières pour celui qui loge dans le coin c'est a faire more »beautiful day has the Abbey with purchase of cheese and beer for those who stay in the corner is to do
Very nice abbey. Spent approximately 2 hours here walking the grounds covered with information boards along the way. Take the opportunity to buy Orval beer and cheese straight from the origin.
Driving the countryside arriving to the Abbaye itself is worth the trip. Many locals can be seen arriving to the brewery exchanging cases of empty bottles for fresh brew. The people there are friendly and helpful, lots of experience with visitors. The cheese and beer is great, enough said.
Magnificent! Words don't describe easily the feelings of peace, history, war and torment! Human all too human 😘❤ "Quel Val d'Or l'Orval!"
This Abbaye justifies every single km you have to make.
Good very nice brewery, nice environment, must see
