La Citadelle de Dinant, Dinant

A fortress that watches over the city, La Citadelle de Dinant stands on the site of a fort that was constructed in 1051. The citadel blends with the cliff face on which it sits, complete with a grassy roof, so, from a distance, it's difficult to see. However, once inside, a huge interior courtyard and a museum offer visitors a glimpse back in time. Climb the 400-plus steps leading to the entrance, or save your energy and ride a cable car to the top. In the museum, learn about the fortress' history with life-size figurines in dioramas, as well as traditional museum exhibits. Go up the stairs to the upper walls of the citadel for a view over the Meuse Valley. Purchase your tickets when you arrive; the attraction is rarely crowded. Views to take your breath away with a good guide. We're getting a picture of this beautiful city too little known to tourists.

A very fun experience with the past, we wandered the domain and forests just see the exhibition of 14-18 when a super enthusiastic guide came us report that they would start the tour immediately (it was a student) she tried to answer all the questions on the go and her language was very clear and understandable even if you hear that French-speaking is was this certainly no downside , it was very instructive both for ourselves and for the children, with the Guide to get on parts that you otherwise would not visit! I recommend it!

Dominating over the city Citadel is one of the main attractions. The town is small, but historically very attractive. From here come the creator of saxophone, brewed beer Leffe. Here the powerful Citadel. The fortress can be reached in two ways: from the bottom of the center of the city by funicular, or for very long and steep stairs. Or you can go with the reverse side and park directly behind the Castle. We have been twice. In April just walked on the fortress. In July, the solo outing is prohibited. You follow for group tours. It is already included in the price. The Guide leads the tour in three languages: French, Flemish and if there are other foreigners in English.

Beautiful, scenic medeival little town along side of the Meuse River. The birth place of Adolph Sax, the saxophone inventor. Great for sight seeing, shopping and eating. Many attractions to spend a good 1 day here.

Never made it inside. We had wanted to take the stairs from the town at the bottom and were already grumbling about having to pay 12 EUR just to go up the steps (did NOT include entrance to the Citadelle!) when the lady told us their card machine was not working and it would have to be cash. She wasn't very nice about it either. So, we drove up in the car where there is at least free parking - this is the recommended way to do it if you have a vehicle. You really can't take in the view unless you pay to get into the Citadelle - everything is blocked off down to the river. At this point we were so disillusioned that we lost the will to pay to get in. By chance, the gate to the playground was open and we sneaked in to take a few photos. It's a great view. We did Dinant as a day trip from Brussels but it's not worth it. It would be worth it as a place to visit if you are already passing through, say Brussels to Luxembourg. The whole town needs a massive injection of investment!

Very interesting place but if you search on the internet pictures are nicer than the Citadelle itself.

Incredible citadel, with a fantastic view on Dinant. Well connected to the village by a cableway. The problems are two: the high cost for the entrance (8,5€ for adults, even if you decide to walk and to not use the cableway) and the fact that the citadel is not well valorized (it has only a small museum, some shops and nothing more). So the stars for the citadel itself would be 5, but the organization deserves 2 stars.

Good for one Day road trip. Castle tour is self explanatory. city view from the top of the hill is good.
