3.8/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web
A fortress that watches over the city, Citadel of Dinant (La Citadelle de Dinant) stands on the site of a fort that was constructed in 1051. The citadel blends with the cliff face on which it sits, complete with a grassy roof, so, from a distance, it's difficult to see. However, once inside, a huge interior courtyard and a museum offer visitors a glimpse back in time. Climb the 400-plus steps leading to the entrance, or save your energy and ride a cable car to the top. In the museum, learn about the fortress' history with life-size figurines in dioramas, as well as traditional museum exhibits. Go up the stairs to the upper walls of the citadel for a view over the Meuse Valley. Purchase your tickets when you arrive; the attraction is rarely crowded. • The Citadel of Dinant is a former fortress and Castle. There are different options to visit to) entrance to the citadel (includes guided tour in French or Dutch) + cable car 8.50 adults and 6 euros children. (b) entry to the citadel (includes guided tour in French or Dutch) + cable car + Cruiser = 14 euros adult + children 10 euros. If you decide to go down the stairs are 408 steps, if you want to go by the cable car as in 3 minutes you are there. The views are stunning, have a small park with games for children. The Guide making the tour, gives it in Dutch and French. It should be noted that he had very good girl attitude. The tour lasts about 45 minutes. Inside travel, corridors, passageways, several rooms, and a fourth that corresponds to a private collection of weapons. A site that you can NOT lose, history, views and architecture. We also had to visit an exhibition of sand of various Disney characters figures (on the same site), it is worth highlighting that some already showed deterioration in the material (the Little Mermaid already not had nose, to the change of Cars you were missing front teeth, Micky Mouse had cobwebs... anyway) but was included in the price of the ticket as an extra. No need to book to buy tickets. TIP. Account with free parking on the purchase of your ticket which many people leave their parked car, makes the journey from the Citadel and then by the city, at the end come to pick up your vehicle

  • An awesome experience - a citadel perched above a picturesque village full of history. Learnt a lot about the history of the citadel in the first world war, the guided tour is worth your time since it lets you see all parts of the citadel.
  • Very nicely preserved and full of information about the citadel's history + amazing views from the top. Recommended. 8,5€ entrance fee for adults, which includes entrance to the cable car.
  • Really great town to visit. There are loads of restaurants along the river. We took the cable car to the citadel and had some amazing views.
  • Whether you are looking up at the proud Citadel from Dinant or Looking down on picturesque Dinant from the Citadel - this location holds so much provincial beauty and charm. Excellent for picture taking and a great place for lunch at one of the cafes on the Meuse. The town's history holds two tragic events - learn more at the Citadel (reached by cable car. )
  • The tour guide was very funny and gave us private lessons in English because his Maine talks were in Dutch and French. The tour was very interesting and at the end it became quite adventurous. You should go there to find out why ;)
