  • I had read a lot about the Christmas Truce. But only the wooden cross, that of the legendary football match between German and British soldiers at Christmas 1914 reminds on the place, was mentioned in my Guidebook. So I was surprised to find a private monument here also. It was inaugurated in only in December 2014. The visitors there have placed footballs and jerseys. I was very moved by this place. In addition to the monument, a British bunker and a military cemetery is located nocj. Across the street, so heading north, was no man's land, where the soldiers together came. Just East, to the Group of houses, is still the wooden cross. Certainly is not really much to see, but the place is of paramount importance and a real monument to humanity. I would that the Memorial in Germany is better known and more visitors from Germany find their way. (In the navigation device to enter a place "Comiens warning Eton", street name, then "Huttebergweg" or "Chemin you Mont de la Hutte")

  • In addition to Prowse Point Military Cemetery is the Christmas Truce Memorial constructed: two reconstructed trenches facing each other, with barbed wire. In front a rust-coloured metal ball on a pole. (Donated by UEFA) This recalls the famous football match between Germans and British on Christmas at the front. Many visitors leave a football behind.

  • As one of the places where a Christmas truce was celebrated together by both parties with football and small presents, it stands for what brings people together in times of peril and hardship and how sports (here football) can unite people from all over the world. This small memorial is worth a visit, not alone for people, interested in The Great war, but peace loving or football-crazed minds can all have a moment of truce right next to Ploegsteert Wood.
  • Newly constructed in 2015, this is a respectful memorial to the Christmas Truce, which took place at several locations along the Western Front in December 1914.
