Grand Place, Brussels

4.7
#1 of 2,908 in Things to do in Belgium
The center of Brussels, Grand Place forms an imposing square of opulent buildings, including the city hall. Dating back to 1523, the city's main square was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1998. Take in the grand architecture of the guild halls, and take a tour of city hall. The square houses the Museum of the City of Brussels and the Brewers Museum, both of which give a good impression of the essence of Brussels. Despite its relatively small size, the square attracts more visitors than any other attraction in the European capital. • A definite must in Brussels. Great architecture. Way better at night though so be sure to visit after sunset. Tons of shops and restaurants and bars. Certainly always crowded but plenty of room to man...  more »

  • It was a gift from my children, four days in March to visit Brussels and Bruges. Highlight the Grand Place, impacts to reach this wonderful square, it is as if it appeared suddenly, narrow streets, large and spacious, with a golden incredible buildings, the town hall with its high tower and opposite the Royal Palace, then the beautiful houses of ancient guilds, to which more original. Important, at noon in this square different tour guides meet, we aim at one in Spanish, are free, but you must sign up with a bit of advance and give you a ticket, then you're at the agreed time. It is worth, make you a rather long tour of the city. We were lucky to elect a guy who was all enthusiasm. At the end of the tour gave him money to will, did warmly as he had won more than. This made it the first day, so the next few days already had a clear idea of everything and we could enjoy our air by some of the routes that we had with the Guide. We returned many times to the Grand Place, it was always full of people, it was as if we sintiésemos need to admire it at different times of the day and night.

  • Beautiful buildings in every direction. Literally 360 degree astonishment. Little shops and restaurants up the nearby alleys are stunningly quaint. Would have loved to have someone there with me but there is always next time. Magical place.
  • Earned the nickname "most beautiful square in the world" for a reason. The seasonal flower carpet is something you have to see if you're around at that time. Plenty of street artists around, a few terrace and restaurants and lots of legends and history. Enjoy
  • Centre of Antwerp and everything in Antwerp stars from here. From there around two PM starts a Spanish and an English free walking tour. It nice to have the idea of the city from a local people. I liked the tour and the city. By the way, you get to buy lots of souvenirs at the city centre :D
  • You can’t miss this central square if you visit Brussels. Just walk around and take in the beautiful buildings all around the square. Nice restaurants and many boutiques in the alleys.
  • It truly is a very beautiful square. All the guildhouses and other buildings around this square have a legacy of their own. Make sure you have a guided tour to know that better. If not interested in history you'll still find this square interesting as it's dotted with many cafes & restaurants and there's so much happening there.

Where to stay in Brussels

It's easy to find accommodations in Brussels for nearly any budget. Tourists generally gravitate to the area surrounding Grand-Place, the city's main square. Also consider staying near Stephanie Square Centre and Boulevard de Waterloo, which are both centrally located. As Europe's unofficial capital, the city boasts a wealth of high-end hotels for visiting diplomats, concentrated along glitzy Avenue Louise. Those looking for a low-budget option will find a host of hostels scattered around the Grand-Place and within walking distance to the city's main attractions.
