Eglise Notre Dame Du Sablon, Brussels

4.5
#4 of 36 in Historic Sites in Brussels
Architectural Building Religious Site
Experience the opulence of Eglise Notre Dame Du Sablon, which has long been a place of worship for the elite of Brussels and serves as a remarkable example of Brabantine Gothic architecture. The land was first consecrated when the Noble Serment of Crossbowmen, a local guild, decided to turn their exercise space into a modest chapel. However, this humble church was replaced in the 15th century, with an interior that was completed in the 17th century. The cathedral is covered in carved reliefs and ornate masonry, while the interior reflects the efforts of the wealthy families to bring the richness of daily life to the church service with gilded Baroque chapels. The fanciful wood carvings on the altar and pulpit are the work of a 19th-century artist, Auguste Schoy. After a church tour, sample some of the sweets from the surrounding chocolate shops. • The Sablon is a lovely area of Brussels where you can easily spend half a day just walking around. When you do, be sure to pop into this beautiful gothic church.  more »
  • One could easily pass by and say "another big church" but this Cathedral does have magnificent windows that seem to make it very, very special and worth a visit.  more »
  • Not as much in the centre of places as other churches, so can be rather quiet. Awesome building and lovely works of art inside.  more »

  • Mirabile typical Gothic church of the region with extraordinary stained-glass windows that leave the visited speechless when they are illuminated by the sun and cast lenloro long colored shadows on the church floor. Do not miss the richly decorated chapels and the outer amazing, not only the facade. Too bad the place is used or how to market or parking! For a just visit takes 45/60 minutes! @gargio76
