The Markt, Bruges

4.5
With landmark buildings and statues of important figures, The Markt sits at the heart of Bruges' historical center. Covering only about 1 hectare (2.5 acres), the main square features the Neo-Gothic provincial court, and the belfry tower, one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Because the square is mostly closed to cars, city celebrations often take place here. In the center of the square, you'll see the statues of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, local heroes who are honored for their role in the Flemish resistance against the French king in 1302. Admire the tall bell tower and the Flemish architecture. You'll find plenty of restaurants surrounding the square, but for quality food at lower prices, choose some place just a short walk from the square. • Everything with a lot (logical) Christmas flavor and the truth is that everything is very well prepared for everyone to enjoy each of the Christmas stalls and / or booths.

  • A very popular and touristy square but at the same time pleasant for the large spaces, the ancient palaces that surround it, the restaurants and cafes.

  • Fantastic place to sit and people watch with beautiful buildings all around. Most of all the bell tower. I wouldn't eat there as most of the cafe's on the square seem very touristy, but walk a block or two in any direction and you're sure to find a quieter place offering fantastic food of any kind.
  • Lots of tourists (of course). Haven't tried any restaurants on the square, but Historium has it's own bar with a balcony overseeing the square. Get a beer tasting set and enjoy some people watching from the upper level.
  • I suggest you stand in the middle and just turn around and absorb the historical sights. It is magnificent. Watching the horse carriages ride really brings history back to life. I would not recommend eating at the restaurants there because they are really overly expensive. Just go to any adjacent street and you will find just as good restaurants at a lower price range.
  • Nice for sure but far to many people for my liking glad I went but won't be going again. If you don't mind crowds you'll love it. Beer is excellent
  • Beautiful square, the tower is breathtaking as well as knackering going up the tower. Then got a boat trip which was really fun and a perfect way to view the city!
