Burg Square, Bruges

4.7
#5 of 34 in Sightseeing in Bruges
Landmark Tourist Spot
It's hard to miss Burg Square, the site of the city hall and bustling cafes. The attraction has been an administration hub since its construction. The 1376 city hall building is known as one of the Bruges' most beautiful landmarks, but it has some competition in the square with Charlemagne's cathedral and the Renaissance civil registry. In fact, almost every era of European architecture is represented in the surrounding buildings. Sit down at one of the cafes to people-watch against the backdrop of grandiose buildings and monuments. • Burg Square is part of the historic centre of Bruges which is a must see for any visitor to this lovely scenic city.  more »
  • I read where on Saturday weddings were common occurrences. Not disappointed. Six centuries of architecture to boot. Wonderful.  more »
  • If you can, try and go on a Wednesday when the markets are on. It is fantastic, very cheap prices on most things. My friend got a half rack of ribs, half sausage and mushrooms for 4 euro.  more »

  • The square in surrounded by beautiful buildings, great cafes, super bars where to try the famous Belgian beers! During the week there are various events taking place..a regular one is the flowers and bulbs, another is the foodstuffs... And open air concerts are also held here. On the side streets there are all kinds of goodies, from knitting of the famous Belgian lace used by women worldwide, to riding a carriage or sitting and having a beer!
  • I almost like this square as much as the Markt. Striking architecture. Simple beautiful
  • Simply beautiful, worth reading the information board on the square, very helpful and informative. Written in a number of languages
  • Beautiful buildings. Foundations of old cathedral can be accessed from Crowne Plaza hotel.
  • Great location to start exploring the city, grab a beer in a street off the square for better value. Horse and cart ride will cost you 50 euros though. Better to walk and spend the cash on beer and sausage.
