  • A unique experience because the Fort largely remained as it was. It is not modernized to the visitor. You undergo a large piece of the fort as the prisoners did, only ... you are smoking and they were not. The history is quite good, that again though with modern techniques. A place that you do think, chills delivers where you quietly comes out.

  • This concentration camp has been preserved as a place of memory and learning. The welcome is friendly (in both national languages). An audio guide is provided and plunges you into the murky atmosphere of a strange and very real world. The tour begins with a history of the fort and its role in 1914. Then, you immerse yourself in the maze of the nazi camp where you can hear the life (or rather the survival) of the prisoners and their executioners. As inhuman as useless work: remove the Earth covering the old fort. Until the liberation and the trial of the jailers, we leave this troubled mind Fort... unforgettable!

  • As everyone can read, this place was not so much a concentration camp as it was a prisoner of war camp. The horrors that the prisoners received were beyond belief, no matter the reason for them being ...  more »

  • Fort Breendonk is one of the best forts to visit in Belgium for any historian or history enthusiast interested in WWI and WWII. Most of the fort is still in the same condition, walking through the fort is the closest one will get to what it might have been like to be there way back when. Overall an excellent place to visit.
  • Sobering reality of how the World responded to a group of unloved people. May we never again...
  • i have been here twice??? 1975 1980.this one place, set me off on a 35 year journey across europe and the med?the list is endless,i was at the IWM in london the other day and this place was photo:d and other places i:ve seen??? i still feel a stench i my nostrils and guts??? i recommend this place as your first journey into dantes inferno
  • Google's definition of "Loved it" as a rating doesn't quite accurately describe how I feel about this place. "Hated it" is probably more accurate, but I can't express that I hated it and give it 5/5 stars at the same time. I've been here twice now, and both times I've felt like this is an important site that everyone needs to visit, and with the audio guide you'll probably end up doing the site in silence. Perhaps the audio tour has become a little long-winded as the museum has grown, and by the end of the tour once you return to the visitor centre you might find yourself suffering information overload and an overwhelming sense of despair to the point where you won't want to go through what happened after the liberation of Belgium, the Mechelen trials, and so forth. Stick with it, get what you can out of it, because the characters introduced on the tour paint a picture of the most horrible period of our recent history. You'll only need to come once, but you need to come.
  • Very interesting place if you want to learn about history
