Alden Biesen is a 16th-century castle in Belgium, located in the small village of Rijkhoven in the municipality of Bilzen in the province of Limburg.Present dayThe castle is used today as a cultural centre and conference centre. Festivals such as the Scottish weekend or the International Story Festival are held there. In addition, "European Classes" take place, intended to foster international learning and collaboration between students. The first ever RSPBA Major Pipe Band Championship held outside the UK was the European Pipe Band Championships held there in September 2003.In addition to the moated castle, the complex contains a church and gardens.HistoryThe knights of the Teutonic Order originally founded the Landcommanderij Alden Biesen ("commandery of Alden Biesen") in the 11th century, but the current buildings were constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was the headquarters of a bailiwick or province of the Teutonic Order in the region of the Maas and Rhine.   • Just fantastic!!! With an i-pad in hand, we were in and around the Castle shown around by Jan Decleir. We have a good hour in the entire history of the Castle and its inhabitants can follow.

  • An openair Museum. Very well done with the tablet that will guide you through the commanderie audiovisually. The lightshow is beautiful, especially the grand finale. Information on the large commandery, the Crusades, the Teutonic order and the plague are transmitted.

  • Nice to walk if good weather. The place is so big. You can also go inside the castle, doesnt cost much. We only walk around the castle and enjoy the sorroundings. After walking, we had a drink in the ...  more »

  • the castle is in great shape as are the gardens.. a fun place to go to if on a sunny day you're in the neighborhood and have a few hours to kill. in the back of the estate there is a small bar.
  • A wonderful location for walking. The castle is beautiful and there are regular activities.
