Mardasson Memorial, Bastogne

Distinctive for its pentagram shape and its interior gallery, Mardasson Memorial commemorates the over 76,000 American soldiers who fell in the Battle of the Bulge. Go inside the atrium to see 10 paintings that depict the battle; around the exterior you'll see engravings of the names of the 50 U.S. states and the battalions that fought in the battle. The Latin inscription on the memorial stone translates as, "The Belgian people remember their American liberators--July 4, 1946." Walk down into the crypt below the memorial to see three altars, each representing a prominent religion in the battalions: Protestant, Catholic, and Judaism. Consider a visit to the history museum near the memorial to learn more about the World War II era. • It’s a nice monument. Don’t miss it if you are at the Bastogne war museum. The steps to the top are narrow and slippery when wet. The view from the top is also very nice.  more »

  • We visited the memorial 13/02 under the snow and it was very nice. In 30 minutes you've toured and read all the information but it's nice when you're in the corner

  • A must see if you want learn more about the battle of the Bulge (December 1944 - January 1945). Monument is shaped as a five-pointed American star and the story of the battle is engraved on the walls. The location for this particular memorial is perfect, especially if you take the time to go the top of the memorial enjoying the panoramic view of the region.
  • A rather simple but powerful memorial to the defenders of Bastogne and to the Transatlantic Alliance. Wonderful site definitely worth a visit along with the nearby War Museum.
  • Very well done memorial. Lists of units on the sides and the states. On the top were maps at the points which showed where the various units were during the battle. No distractions and clear concise information.
  • Must see. Free entry for memorial. Its grand and impressive and perfect to teach kids. Also beautiful views on top with maps showing were the divisions and battles were.
  • Very impressive monument to honour the American soldiers fought at the Bulge.
