Rubens House (Rubenshuis), Antwerp

#2 of 29 in Museums in Antwerp
Visit the home of one of the world's best-known painters at Rubens House (Rubenshuis). Peter Paul Rubens designed the home and studio himself in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace. The house's rooms surround an internal courtyard, which gives you a 360-degree external view of the interior rooms. Rubens taught students in the studio here, and completed many of his notable pieces. The domestic portion of the house was the home of the Rubens family. Each room has been completely renovated to its original state with period furniture and decor reflecting Rubens' personal taste. Many of the artist's famous works hang on the walls and personal artifacts are displayed in the rooms. A private guide can be expensive and is best booked in advance for a group. However, a self-guided tour is easy with brochures and information plaques in English. To visit Rubens House (Rubenshuis) on your trip to Antwerp, use our Antwerp trip itinerary maker site.

  • Many wonderful artworks - still lifes, Biblical scenes, Marian themes - by artists from around Antwerp. A printed guidebook is available to explain some of the intricacies of many of the works. Select works have interactive multimedia displays that walk you through restoration processes and the relation of certain museum works to other works in Antwerp and around the world.
  • Probably hour or so plenty of time, like the free little number guided book. 50+ pieces. Little warm in half of the museum, other half is air conditioned and glass protected. Neat light contrast in Caravaggio style and some small paintings of detail brushstrokes. Lots of roman influences. Especially like the garden potted yucca pomegranate fig, probably meaningful in their own way. And lovely grape vines.
  • Very interesting the Rubens house. Beautiful painting in to the owner' s private house outside with a garden. Look at it!
  • See the authentic atmosphere of Rubens' time and learn about his life. There are paintings of other artists, too. No air conditioning in the old premises, only in the new part. Was very hot at 35° outside. Beautiful garden. 10 euros entrance fee.
  • Beautiful house with large collection of Flemish master pairings. Learn about Rubens and the painters that were influenced by him. Tickets cost €8 and the visit lasts about an hour
