  • On the side of the Cathedral of Antwerp is located in the center of the square stands the Groenplaats, and, with his back to the Cathedral, the statue of Peter Paul Rubens, Antwerp's most famous person, so famous that almost everything that is not about diamonds in this city, it's about Rubens. The statue shows a Rubens as a friendly smiling and very likeable man who rows the right hand out, as if he calls on those who look at him to order the next masterpiece. It is the Belgian sculptor Willem Geefs (Guillaume) (1805-1883) who performed the sculpture. On the Internet you can read the year 1843 for the sculpture's Genesis, but on the shelf under the shape of Rubens it says clearly in Roman numerals MDCCCXXXX which should result in 1840. But that is a minor detail. Most tourists who visit Antwerp, will also visit the Cathedral, and it is natural to go past the Geefs ' sculpture at the Groenplaats and look at it.
