The Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei is the first art institution in Taiwan dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. The museum building was originally the Jan Cheng Elementary School, established during the Japanese colonial period. In 1945, the building became the Taipei Government City Hall. After the government moved to Hsinyi District in 1994, the policy of the reuse of historical buildings prompted the old city hall to be transformed in May 2001 into the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei and Jan Cheng Junior High School. MOCA Taipei is the first museum in Taiwan to be successfully built in a historical building, and it is the only one of its kind to share the same architecture with a school.

Since its inauguration, the museum has combined its historical architecture with contemporary art, entwining yesterday’s memories with today’s culture and introducing the most innovative and avant-garde visual aesthetics, media technologies, architectural design, and fashion from Taiwan and overseas. At the same time, MOCA Taipei continuously promotes artistic education and encourages the community to regard the aesthetics of everyday life. In the future, MOCA Taipei will persevere on its mission to promote and motivate multidisciplinary creativity both locally and internationally. With rich and diverse artistic performances, the museum will vigorously introduce creativity into Taipei, art into the community, and the ever evolving technology into the new life of the historical building.

  • A lot of the artwork is presented without feeling like a context has been built around it. This leaves very abstract pieces being displayed, sometimes with no explanation of what they're about. The choice of artwork also wasn't to my taste at all, in some instances leaning towards more design and craft than art that really had a message. I also though the photo museum, a 5 minutes walk away, does a much better job of video installations.
  • Incredible collection of modern and contemporary art. Tickets are cheap and the content of the museum is usually well worth it. One of the better contemporary collections in Flanders.
  • A great museum with a nice cafe / bar with outdoor seating!
  • Let's start positive: I really liked the building and the restaurant at the top floor is nice. You can dine next to a piece Keith harring did on one of the walls. But... The expositions were not really my thing, there was no context given and only a limited number of artists exposed. I wouldn't go there again or recommend it to anyone...
  • Not worth the visit today. I've never been before. They have lots of building work going on so there is limited items to see. There is a reduced ticket price, however if we had been fully aware of the limited exhibition we would have not paid the money. On the ground floor there was 'photographic art work'. Probably the worst selection of photographs in an art museum I've ever seen. Don't rate it at all.
