Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp

4.5
#1 of 13 in Historic Sites in Antwerp
Stand in wonder at the delicately carved reliefs and statuary of the iconic, yet incomplete, Cathedral of Our Lady. The cathedral's single Gothic spire pierces the sky at 123 m (404 ft); plans to build a matching partner were never realized. The cathedral played an important role in the development of choral music, with some of the 15th-century masters making their home here as vicars. Consider attending a concert in the chapel to experience the sounds that inspired an entire generation of musicians. Be sure to check out the Rubens painting housed inside; it was returned to its place after World War II. • Been here a few times, and every time it is stunning. Right now a great exhibition of works from the antwerp museum with various paintings commissioned by various guilds. And of course top paintings b...  more »
  • This building from the outside is already very much here with its variety-rich facade, you will be surprised even more inside. Paintings, sculptures, and all sorts of ecclesiastical items highlight the great cultural significance of this imposing architecture. It is noticed also, that an entrance fee is charged, it is really worth!

  • The cathedral of the Holy Mother is one of the most pure and impressive examples of it’s kind. The gothic church features an unforgettable collection of (a.o.) Rubens paintings and a 123m high tower t...  more »

  • The most beautiful place in Antwerp, for sure! This Gothic style cathedral is probably the focal point of beauty in the entire city of Antwerp. It's full of intricate works. And I mean both on the outside and on the inside. Made out of stone, out of wood, painted - the cathedral has it all. Once you're inside and you're lucky enough to hear the organ play, you will be blown away by this experience. The tall style of the building and the organ will really shake you to the core and make you feel awe. Another great thing is the area around the cathedral, on the outside. There are many beautiful historic houses and it's the perfect place to feel and experience what the place might have been like back in history. It's definitely a trip that's worth doing for anyone. Even if you don't usually like cathedrals or churches or mass - you don't often get to see a gigantic monument of culture like this one. It's the real experience and will make you and whoever is coming with you remember what's possible for humans. If we work together, we can even build a giant, beautiful building to come together for hundreds of years.
  • The cathedral is beautiful to look at, especially from the outside, and definitely deserves a place among the highlights of Antwerp. The inside is quite nice too, but the clinically white walls feel just off. There are some nice works of art and you can even visit the catacomb (albeit a little one) but if you've seen some other cathedrals, this one has little new to offer. It has enough to justify its €6 entry fee, but you might as well just appreciate it from the outside for free.
  • Cathedral of Our Lady is beautiful and full of treasures, painting from 17 century signed by Rubens and amazing woods ornements. The outside is also interesting and I love to sit on a terrace and enjoy the view.
  • Historical gothic church, full of Antwerp history to tell. Nice night lightings. Lively local arts outside.
  • Stunning cathedral. The painting exhibition is really incredible. So many Rubens!! Take your time to enjoy every single details.
