Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp

4.5
#1 of 13 in Historic Sites in Antwerp
Stand in wonder at the delicately carved reliefs and statuary of the iconic, yet incomplete, Cathedral of Our Lady. The cathedral's single Gothic spire pierces the sky at 123 m (404 ft); plans to build a matching partner were never realized. The cathedral played an important role in the development of choral music, with some of the 15th-century masters making their home here as vicars. Consider attending a concert in the chapel to experience the sounds that inspired an entire generation of musicians. Be sure to check out the Rubens painting housed inside; it was returned to its place after World War II. • A very beautiful Cathedral which is visible from almost anywhere. All Antwerp being dug over, the Cathedral also placed pavement. Inside the exhibition Rubens, entrance-6 euro per person

  • Despite a price of admission € 6 that can surprise when we used to visit places of prayers for free, the place is sublime and spellbinding. The works presented are very beautiful, including the 4 Rubens and Jan Fabre. A must see!

  • The Church of the Holy Mother of the world's cultural heritage is an asymmetry of the great Gothic architecture, the 16 century-built cathedral is only completed on the north side of the clock tower, but the height of 123 meters is still the highest church in the Benelux Toulouse Alliance. Because the steeple is too high and the four-week building gathers, it's hard to make a full picture even in front of the city hall. Also because the steeple is too high, go to river side can see the towering building in the tower. The tower is surrounded by many small minarets, intricate carvings and flower windows, and under the Zhao Ying of the sun, it really is holy.

  • After 169 years of construction the cathedral of Antwerp finally dominated Antwerp's skyline in 1521 with a height of 123 metres. It's the highest Gothic building in the Low Countries. It took 169 years (1352-1521) of labour to raise the 123m heavenward-reaching steeple of the Cathedral, the highest Gothic building in the Low Countries. The Cathedral is an iconic treasury, with an impressive collection of major art works, including a series of paintings by Rubens. Now, after twenty years, the seven-naved church has been restored to its former architectural glory. Fascinating features include Rubens’ ‘Elevation of the Cross’ and his ‘Descent from the Cross’. Any visit to Antwerp starts with a visit of the Cathedral of Our Lady.
  • The most beautiful place in Antwerp, for sure! This Gothic style cathedral is probably the focal point of beauty in the entire city of Antwerp. It's full of intricate works. And I mean both on the outside and on the inside. Made out of stone, out of wood, painted - the cathedral has it all. Once you're inside and you're lucky enough to hear the organ play, you will be blown away by this experience. The tall style of the building and the organ will really shake you to the core and make you feel awe. Another great thing is the area around the cathedral, on the outside. There are many beautiful historic houses and it's the perfect place to feel and experience what the place might have been like back in history. It's definitely a trip that's worth doing for anyone. Even if you don't usually like cathedrals or churches or mass - you don't often get to see a gigantic monument of culture like this one. It's the real experience and will make you and whoever is coming with you remember what's possible for humans. If we work together, we can even build a giant, beautiful building to come together for hundreds of years.
  • One of the most beautiful places in Belgium. Nice shopping zone inside. Great picture can be taken.
  • Looks fantastic from the outside, and so does it from the inside, too. The Christmas Mass yesterday was beautiful, even for those not being deeply religious. The Rubens collection inside is simply fantastic, it's a little piece of history and it also is surprising to see how openly they are exhibited contrary to some museums also holding masterpieces from Rubens. A must see place if visiting Antwerp!
  • With relatively inexpensive ticket there is lot to see in the cathedral. Beautiful paintings, high ceilings and even a crypt. Leaflet given at the booth nicely points out things to see and gives information about them.
