Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp

4.5
#1 of 12 in Historic Sites in Antwerp
Stand in wonder at the delicately carved reliefs and statuary of the iconic, yet incomplete, Cathedral of Our Lady. The cathedral's single Gothic spire pierces the sky at 123 m (404 ft); plans to build a matching partner were never realized. The cathedral played an important role in the development of choral music, with some of the 15th-century masters making their home here as vicars. Consider attending a concert in the chapel to experience the sounds that inspired an entire generation of musicians. Be sure to check out the Rubens painting housed inside; it was returned to its place after World War II. I don't know why tears have been flowing freely. But away from the front of the Rubens painting, one who spent hours slowly. Excellent explanation page in Japan.

There is in this Cathedral of beautiful paintings which are highlighted by the architecture of the place! Many were painted for this place... "The descent from the cross" Rubens is upsetting! Certainly pray there are more well-suited chapels! Awareness to more easily pay the entry fee! If you attend a religious service entry is free of course...

Great Cathedral, but not as great as it used to be... These days, Antwerp Cathedral is as picturesque an example of Gothic Religious Architecture as you could hope wish for. Immensely ornate and home to a sizable collection of art treasures, it's well worth taking a couple of hours to look around learn about. Pro-Tip: Along the southern Aisle you'll find an inconspicuous staircase, leading to the Catacombs. The space below is cramped, and not for the claustrophobic, but it provides a fascinating insight into burial arrangements, as they were in the building's heyday. With that said, these days it has a sanitized, over-groomed feel, compared to the way it was before its renovation back in the early 90's. Nevertheless, no visit to Antwerp would be complete without a tour of this legendary piece of religious history.

It is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've seen. It has a very interesting history as well.

I would have loved to have gone inside, but alas unlike many of the other wonderful cathedrals in the country, this one you have to pay to get in.

The most beautiful cathedral of the Benelux and beyond. Check out the artwork: amazing works by Rubens and a beautiful new statue by Fabre. Another highlight is the grand organ with over 5000 pipes. You haven't seen Antwerp if you skip her stunning cathedral.
