Antwerp Zoo (Dierentuin), Antwerp
(3.6/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
View animal habitats as 19th-century travelers did at Antwerp Zoo (Dierentuin), the oldest zoo in the country. Established in 1843, the zoo originally reflected director Jacques Kets' vision to promote the zoological and botanical sciences. Over the years the attraction added primates, African species, and a sampling of animals from almost every environment. In the 20th century, the zoo was updated with larger habitats that mimic the animal's home. Hippos, penguins, sea lions, and elephants all have public feeding times; pick up a printed schedule of feedings and caretaker chats from the ticket kiosk. To keep you energized, there are two sit-down restaurants and picnic areas where you can enjoy your own lunch. Purchase tickets onsite or online. Visit the zoo's website for seasonal ticket promotions. Free wheelchairs and special tours for visitors with decreased mobility are available upon request. • We have a subscription to the zoo. Although we used to prefer to go we went more to the Planckendael zoo, especially on a Sunday morning. If you asked enough is it there quiet (will be busier from 10:30 am but with subscription you may from 9 am). because the small-scale is is all much better manageable, especially with small children. The new "Savannah" is beautiful, and we often take a coffee on the terrace while children play in the playground. The new passage on 6 meters altitude with view on the Red Pandas is also highly recommended, especially if the Sun is shining. Overall, I find Pairi Daiza still the most beautiful zoo in the Benelux, but that is a different concept, much bigger, really for a day trip.

  • So close to the beautiful railwaystation! If you like to see inspiring pictures of my visit in Antwerp check: YouTube Liesbeth Dewerchin Creative videos!!!!
  • Very nice and complete Zoo. Special location, right in the Centre of Antwerp. Right next to the station. All major animals there are represented. Nicely laid out and refurbished with a fly over the last years etc. Unfortunately, as in many amusement parks and zoos, the amounts in the horeca outrageously high.
