Antwerp Zoo (Dierentuin), Antwerp

(3.6/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web)
View animal habitats as 19th-century travelers did at Antwerp Zoo (Dierentuin), the oldest zoo in the country. Established in 1843, the zoo originally reflected director Jacques Kets' vision to promote the zoological and botanical sciences. Over the years the attraction added primates, African species, and a sampling of animals from almost every environment. In the 20th century, the zoo was updated with larger habitats that mimic the animal's home. Hippos, penguins, sea lions, and elephants all have public feeding times; pick up a printed schedule of feedings and caretaker chats from the ticket kiosk. To keep you energized, there are two sit-down restaurants and picnic areas where you can enjoy your own lunch. Purchase tickets onsite or online. Visit the zoo's website for seasonal ticket promotions. Free wheelchairs and special tours for visitors with decreased mobility are available upon request. • visit a zoo partially under construction and in a period where some animals are in quarantine (risk of avian flu)... However, the zoo is in a nice location, large, very accessible (can not be closer to the station) some spaces for animals are reduced and deserve to be expanded for the good being of animals - or even better (the net above the pingoiuns space does not facilitate their visibility) the couple of elephants is adorable

  • Cozy trip by train to Antwerp Zoo. Easy accessibility by train is certainly a very big plus! A visit is always worth it. This time it was pretty a long time since we had been yet and we were surprised by all the changes. Unfortunately, one is with very many projects allowing the visibility of some animals which is less. The bird flu on top of also creates limitations. You can already see that after all the work there very nice will look like! The tour at the entrance to the sea lions, for example, is spectacular, with beautiful ponds! For our next visit we will again though wait for the work will be done. Planckendael is also ... in the afternoon we had dinner in the ' new ' Savannah, the seats inside are pretty limited, I have no idea if enlargement is still there! However, the food was very good quality and the price was also in order! All in all a successful trip and we certainly continue to Subscriber!
