Uspensky Cathedral, Vitebsk
(5/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
See the biggest bell in Belarus, weighing 4,716 kg (5.2 tons), in a belfry of Uspensky Cathedral. The first cathedral was erected in the 18th century on the site of a smaller church and much earlier pagan shrine. It was destroyed and rebuilt many times. Climb to the observation deck to get an aerial view of the city. On the north wall of the cathedral, you'll discover a memorial plate dedicated to people whose remains were found on site during the restoration works. They were most likely victims of the Soviet secret police or the Gestapo. The remains are buried near the church. Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus consecrated the new cathedral in 2011. • Prechistenskaya mountain in Vitebsk in ancient times was called the Bald, it is obvious that in pagan times there was a pagan temple. The first documentary evidence of the existence of the Orthodox Church of the Virgin on the Bald (Prechistenskoj) mountain refers to the year 1406. By the verdict of the Polish court on the murder of Uniate Bishop Joseph Kuntsevich Dormition Church was dismantled, executed 20 people, a city deprived of magdeburskogo law and all privileges. In 1743 was laid brick building of the temple and monastery. Author of the project was Italian architect Joseph fountain. Completed Temple after the partition of Poland by the efforts of Russian Orthodox Governor-General Chernysheva and civil Governor Krechetov and was completed in the year 1777. In 1799, g. uspensky Cathedral by order of Paul I was transferred to the Orthodox. In September 1936. The Cathedral was blown up. It was blown up one of the most beautiful temples of Belaya RUS, spiritual sanctuary. In 1998 g. Patriarch Alexy II laid a capsule with a commemorative diploma and consecrated the first stone on the restoration of the Cathedral. The Cathedral began to build in the year 2000. And turned out very nice. Very. It is interesting that in the 19th century in the nation it was rumoured that from uspenski Cathedral under the Western Dvina is an underground passage. This legend told us. They say that made Super drainage system of brick and wood, that gave rise to such rumors. In front of the Cathedral is a monument to Patriarch Alexei the second. Put in the year 2013. Named Patriarch Alexy II much connected in Vitebsk. It is the Patriarch in 1998 year laying and future stone was sanctified by the assumption Cathedral. More than 15 times came to Earth Belarus Alexy. Monument-is good. Feel the greatness of soul power Alex, spirit. And the fact that the monument is situated next to the Cathedral of the Dormition, too symbolic, because the opening of the temple is a huge merit of Patriarch Alexy II. Very pleased that local priests with soul communicate with his flock, a very heartfelt talk, it immediately catches the eye. Were at the beginning of October 2016 onwards. Everyone really enjoyed it. And the story of the Guide, and the Cathedral itself. Emotional place!
