Victory Square, Minsk

4.4
#3 of 23 in Sightseeing in Minsk
Landmark Tourist Spot
Victory Square is a genuine Soviet-era square. See the 38 m (124 ft) high granite monument dedicated to the millions who died in the Great Patriotic War--World War II. Watch for the red star and the old Soviet coat of arms on its top, and pay attention to the sculpture of Lenin on the side of the monument. The face of Stalin, which used to be there, was converted into Lenin's ear. An eternal flame flickers at the base of the obelisk, making it a popular spot for photographs. You can discover more about the square and its role in Belarusian history in the museum under the square. The main entrance to famous Gorky Park is also on this square. • Really impressive square. So clean and tidy not like many other city centers around the world. Would definitely recommend a visit.  more »
  • Once upon a time in the late 70 's, visited Minsk. Came out of the train and with demonstrations on May 1 reached the victory square. Visited again on this area, see the eternal flame in front of the granite Obelisk with the order of victory at the top.

  • A vivid symbol of a country that no longer exists-the USSR, because these stelae is practically in all our major cities. But this square there is an underground "eternal flame". First on the upper part of the city center, the traffic is directed around the monument ... Star cities of heroes-as a route for new journeys in the country's history. We, for example, planned for the next school holidays. The houses around the square it to say that all of this idea and the embodiment of a single architect. Note the Yellow House with "Pelicans": actually this peace doves, but local legend says the Pelican brief. At the bottom also have eternal flame, as well as additional information about winning ... Down, even if you do not have in the subway ... read the poems ...

Where to stay in Minsk

The funky town of Minsk is flooded with cool hotels and chic apartments to rent, many of which can be quite luxurious. Renting an apartment is a great option--and if you are traveling with a group, you can keep the cost per person down. While bed and breakfasts and guesthouses are not quite as popular in this city, you can find affordable lodging at the nice but less expensive hotels that may sacrifice location or amenities. Most hotels and hostels will arrange to register you as a foreigner with the police. If you rent an apartment-style accommodation, make sure to check in advance whether or not your host will do so. Without registration, you can stay in Belarus for only five business days.
