Holy Spirit Cathedral, Minsk

4.6
#5 of 54 in Historic Sites in Belarus
Religious Site Church
At Holy Spirit Cathedral, see the miraculous icon of Theotokos, which purportedly appeared on a riverbank in 1500. The cathedral was originally erected as a part of a Bernardine monastery in the 17th century. Notice the golden-blue image of the Holy Virgin on its white front exterior, flanked by two tall bell towers. Allegedly, part of the church served as a transit prison for evicted kulaks, and the building also served as a gym and an archive. • Quiet contemplative place on a Saturday night, full of worshippers on Sunday morning. Both nice experiences. Even as an outsider I felt very welcome. Plenty of beautiful icons to look at. Noticed that...  more »
  • Really well maintained and with some stunning icons. Whatever your religious views this church was a place of contemplative peace and tranquility. A very special and moving experience.  more »

  • One of the few tourist attraction in Minsk
  • The Holy Spirit Cathedral is the main cathedral of the Belarusian Orthodox Church and dates back to 1633-1642. This was located next to our hotel in Minsk so we passed by it many times each day, as a functioning church it had a constant flow of visitors at all hours. There is plenty to see around the Cathedral with exhibitions often held to the side, many other interesting buildings, hotels and restaurants. The subway is located nearby as well.

Where to stay in Minsk

The funky town of Minsk is flooded with cool hotels and chic apartments to rent, many of which can be quite luxurious. Renting an apartment is a great option--and if you are traveling with a group, you can keep the cost per person down. While bed and breakfasts and guesthouses are not quite as popular in this city, you can find affordable lodging at the nice but less expensive hotels that may sacrifice location or amenities. Most hotels and hostels will arrange to register you as a foreigner with the police. If you rent an apartment-style accommodation, make sure to check in advance whether or not your host will do so. Without registration, you can stay in Belarus for only five business days.
