The New Castle, Grodno

2.8
#10 of 16 in Historic Sites in Grodno
Polish kings of the 18th century spent their summers at The New Castle. The castle forms an architectural complex with the old castle set on the other side of an arch bridge. The castles are home to the city’s historical and archaeological museum. The museum features about 7,000 artifacts, including artwork, old printed and handwritten books, weapons, icons, and religious items. Look for the relief of a Soviet coat of arms on the pediment of the main entrance. A sculpture of a mythical chthonic creature perched on the main gate represents a woman with a lioness body carrying a little boy on her back. • Well if the old lock not too looks like a castle, then this is the House of culture of some kind. Wonder how this can be called a castle

  • Building of neoclassical Soviet, with white façade with main door of access supported by 6 large columns. In the Centre and overlooking the entrance Soviet symbols, specifically the sickle and hammer wrapped in a wreath, and behind an obelisk topped with a Soviet cross as in the remarkable architecture within this country. By inside a museum with different information. The castle was built by the Kings of Poland in the 18th century and was partially destroyed in the second world war, being later reconstructed. After its reconstruction, it was the local communist party headquarters

  • In General, for me the castle itself had not made any impression-rather too much construction in Manor in an inconspicuous architectural style. And here is the garden with Apple trees-Louche apples I have not only not eaten-not seen!

  • I think my favorite part was the collections of butterflies and other stuffed animals. My kids loved it too. There is an extensive book collection, which I loved and fellow bibliophiles will find interesting. In Belarus, it is very common to keep all lights off in the rooms until you go into them. So if it isn't busy there will be people following you around (especially if you have kids haha) to turn lights on and to make sure you don't mess with anything. That might seem strange to foreigners, but we've gotten used to it. One of these ladies stayed with us throughout the last floor carrying my youngest and explaining things to him. So friendly and kind.
  • A bit too modern building, but worth a visit as it has been the centrepiece of a lot of historical events in Polish and Belarusian history, including the last sejm
  • Actually the Castle by the Communists who marred by man "'s got germs on" cultural heritage, that have party headquarters here. But the Museum very interesting-what a little Polish accents, with the original Royal documents including; an interesting exhibition of photography (m.in. stuffed polar bear) and an intriguing display of modern art-works by young artists of Belarusian; beautiful interior of the Palace. The Lord "resource" from the free wouczera (entrance to the Museum costs 4.5 BYR, which is approx. 8 EUR per person) I will not comment on the ...

  • What currently exists under the name "New Castle", is de facto the former headquarters of the KGB. The castle is something was to the year 1945, and then the building was converted in the style of "Stalinist classicism", and effectively zniweczono its historic qualities. Currently trying to restore some value but without historical ago real reconstruction, reproduction of a former State of the Castle, nothing good will come out.
