Brest Fortress, formerly known as Brest-Litovsk Fortress, is a 19th-century Russian fortress in Brest, Belarus, the former Byelorussian SSR. In 1965, the title Hero Fortress was given to the Fortress to commemorate the defence of the frontier stronghold during the first week of the German-Soviet War, when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, with the launch of World War II's Operation Barbarossa. The title Hero Fortress corresponds to the title Hero City, that was awarded to an eventual total of twelve Soviet cities. Brest Fortress is situated at a height of 135 meters.
The Brest fortress has sustained its original outline of a star shaped fortification since its construction in the early 19th century. The Citadel, the core of the fortress, was on the central island formed by the Bug River and the two branches of the Mukhavets River. The island was skirted by a ring of a two-storied barrack with 4 semi-towers. The 1.8 km long barrack comprised 500 rooms to accommodate 12,000 soldiers within thick walls built from super strong red bricks. Originally there were 4 gates to enter the Citadel. Today only Kholm Gate and Terespol Gate can be seen, most part of the barrack lies in ruins.

  • Good museum to give background to the events during WW2 that occurred at the fortress. Some displays are in English, but you can easily get the idea about the artifacts and photographs which have not been translated. Do not miss the excellent museum shop downstairs. Very reasonable prices on some interesting souvenirs, from coins to old bullets.
  • We remember.
  • I liked how respect was paid in this way to the victims and the brave soldiers who sacrificed themselves.
  • MemORIAL COMPLEX «BREST HERO-FORTRESS» On September, 25 1971 the memorial complex «Brest Fortress» was opened. More than 600 veterans of the Brest garrison 1941 were present. There are the ruins of the old fortress, the battlefields, the monumental sculptures presented in a unified architectural and artistic ensemble of the memorial, that perpetuated the «true story of the legendary heroes of the Brest fortress
  • An incredibly moving place. If you’re not from Eastern Europe you should visit these monuments and learn more about the Second World War from the perspective of Belarus. The museum of war territory of peace has great exhibits, be sure to rent an audio guide!
