Religious Site
Standing on a patch of land known in Barbados as God's acre, St. James Parish Church is considered one of the four oldest surviving churches in the nation. The original wooden structure of the church was first constructed in 1628, with stone lain in 1874 that still stands today. Today, this peaceful sanctuary contains various beautiful monuments and pieces of historical significance, including Barbados' oldest bell, preserved as a monument that predates the famous Liberty Bell of America. Take a quiet stroll around the church and grounds, observing the various noted Barbadians and original settlers laid to rest in the cemetery. • Worth a stop to see if traveling on the west coast of the island. Beautiful mahogany and limestone place. Bit of history too. Well maintained for its age.
