Morgan Lewis Windmill, St. Andrew, Barbados is the last sugar windmill to operate in Barbados. The mill stopped operating in 1947. In 1962 the mill was given to the Barbados National Trust by its owner Egbert L. Bannister for preservation as a museum. The site was listed in the 1996 World Monuments Watch by the World Monuments Fund. Restoration began by the Barbados National Trust during the following summer. In 1997, financial support was provided by American Express for emergency repairs. The mill was dismantled for restoration, and reopened in 1999. With all its original working parts having been preserved intact, the sails were able to turn again after the project was completed, and cane was ground again after more than half a century. It is one of only two working sugar windmills in the world today. During the 'crop' season, February through July, its sails are put in place and it operates one Sunday in each month, grinding cane and providing cane juice. Around the interior of the mill wall is a museum of sugar mill and plantation artefacts, and an exhibition of old photographs. Visitors can climb to the top of the mill.

  • This was my favourite visit during the two weeks I spent in Barbados. The windmill is beautifully restored and the surrounding small garden is beautiful. There is a lovely small cafe. The gardens are free to visit. If you would like a guided tour of the windmill the cost is only B$5. The tour guide was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
  • A quick stop on your island tour to see the only remaining functioning mill. It's super cheap to get a little tour up to the top and the guide there is very friendly and knowledgeable. Don't drive past this one!
  • This is a fabulous site you MUST fit into your trip. Don’t just snap a photo from your car, get out and walk up to the windmill to see an amazing view of the coast, explore the historic structure, and taste the best expresso on the island. Exploring the grounds is free, and take this chance to use a clean public restroom. If you have time, pay the entrance fee to explore the inter workings of the historic windmill.
  • We stopped here today unexpectedly. So glad we did. We did the private tour with Ralph. It was very reasonable and the fee is donated to the Barbados national trust. He was so incredibly knowledgeable about the mill, the history of the sugar cane industry, the island and other things. You get to go up inside the mill, it’s been very well restored and set up for the tour. We highly recommend this for everyone including kids. Thank you!
  • We were on a taxi tour and unfortunately, after running to the restroom and then grabbing a drink in the cafe, there wasn't much time for the full tour. To really get the most from this, other than great photos, you need to engage with the tour operator and go tour the inside. I'll have to come back and do that, although what we did get to learn about it was most interesting.
