Harry Bayley Observatory, Bridgetown

3.9
#2 of 6 in Museums in Saint Michael Parish
Named after Dr. Harry Bayley, distinguished Barbadian and keen amateur astronomer, the Harry Bayley Observatory is the only one of its kind in the Eastern Caribbean. Situated in Clapham, St. Michael, the Observatory was officially opened in 1963. Thanks to the help and generosity of the Sfumato Foundation, the Observatory has been refurbished and re-equipped. Its primary instrument is now a 16-inch Meade telescope.

The Harry Bayley Observatory is the home of the Barbados Astronomical Society, founded on June 12, 1956, by Dr. Harry Bayley and Mr. Eustace Thomas. When Dr. Bayley died in 1958, the membership voted to erect an observatory in his memory. An acre of land at Clapham, St. Michael, was donated for the site of the building which was designed by the late Barbara Hill. Following a five-year campaign of fund-raising by members and donations from a kind public, the observatory was constructed and finally dedicated in January 1963.

Now registered as an incorporated, non-profit organization, The Barbados Astronomical Society, Inc. continues to manage the observatory.

  • I this is amazing, you get to star gaze all night until 9:00. There is this big electrical telescope on the top of the roof in the dome that navigation automatically once the tour guide set the location on the device it sets to the Moon, North Star, Jupiter etc.
  • Very good introduction to the study of the cosmos. It was great seeing the various constellations. The St. Mary's Cub scouts loved it and want to go again.
  • It was a great experience being able to look through the telescope at the stars and the moon. I was too late for the lecture but I enjoyed being educated on the stars and space by the various staff. My advice would be to go on a night with a full moon if you want to see that and a moonless night if you would like to see more stars.
  • An interesting zero screen time evening.
  • Was great looking at our universe and learning so much more, we always look into the sky but to actually see saturn, and the moon so closely, opens your mind to soo much more! The young man was soo friendly also teaching us alot.
