Ratargul Swamp Forest, Sylhet City

#1 of 17 in Things to do in Sylhet City
Hire a motor boat to explore Ratargul Swamp Forest, the only freshwater swamp forest in Bangladesh. See around 70 kinds of plants and various animals, such as monkeys and water monitors. A range of birds reside in the forest, so keep an eye out for swans, doves, water fowls, eagles, parrots, and egrets. You need permission to tour the forest without a guide, so it's best to hire a local boat and let the guide inform you about everything on offer at this evergreen forest. During monsoon season, water from hills of India floods the forest and creates the swamp, the depth of which depends on the quantity of rainfall. You can also visit the swamp when there's no rainfall, but you have to walk in clay. Ask Inspirock to suggest an itinerary and make planning a trip to Sylhet City fast, fun, and easy.

  • Very nice and beautiful scenario of natural forest. To see natural forest by boat its feel awesome. To see it's beauty, It is best in rainy season when water filled every where. You can journey inside the forest area by a engine free boat to see animals free movement and hear animals sound also.
  • This forest has a nice views. Visitors come here to enjoy the natural beauty of the forest. Boat ride is another matter of enjoy through the forest. One can easily manager boat at the boat stand though it cost slight higher. There is a nice combination of water and trees.
  • Natural beauty of bangladesh ❤ It's a beautiful place to soothe your eyes. You have to rent a boat to see the area. You can see different trees & animals roaming there. There is a watch tower which is not in good condition. Better to avoid that. Other things are quite eye soothing. ☺
  • I liked everything about Ratargul; the boat ride, the silence, the scenic beauty, everything. I was amazed knowing that the locals didn't allow any engine boat to go inside the jungle as it would spoil the water as well as the sound would harm the serenity. First time when we visited the place, it was just the end of monsoon. The water level was still so high that we could see only the tops of few Hijal trees above the water. The boat took us to the deep inside the jungle. The more we entered the jungle the more amazing the view was. I never went to Amazon, but I felt like this was the mini Amazon in Bangladesh. We were fortunate to see monkeys jumping from branches to branches. My nephew saw a snake crawling from water to the trees. A huge beehive was seen at one of the branches. The forest gave us the true taste of being in a jungle. But we were not panicked. Before entering into the forest we were told not to make much noise, not to be panicked, not to scream if we find any snake or other creatures. We were very obedient about it. The only sound around us was the one made by the blades of the boat on the water. We loved the silence. The second time we visited Ratargul was in mid-October. The water level reduced so much that we actually walked inside and climbed the trees inside the jungle. The green was pale but the nature was still beautiful and serene. We loved it even without the water.  One must carry their own food and water inside the forest. As there is no food available inside. But please stop yourself from littering. The water might look dirty and stinky but it is because of the rotten leaves in the water and nothing else. Don’t scream or get panicked if you see any snake swimming in the water or monkeys on the trees, they won’t harm you unless you hit on them. Don’t try to feed the monkeys.  The best time to go to Ratargul is monsoon (June-August). However, an early September visit will also give one enough pleasure.
  • One of the amazing place of Bangladesh. This swamp forest of Sylhet should be amazed you. Here nature, forest and water full your heart with heavenly joy. There's a tower by which you can have a look of the beautiful scenery of this swamp forest. The appropriate time to visit this forest is March to October. Welcome To Beautiful Bangladesh.
