New Market, Dhaka City

4.1
#3 of 10 in Shopping in Bangladesh
The largest market in Dhaka, triangular-shaped New Market spreads over 98 ha (242 ac) where one can find almost anything: textiles, cosmetics, food, souvenirs, jewelry, optics, travel equipment, and antique books, and more. Stop for a snack at one of the many vendors selling local food, and put your haggling skills to use to negotiate cheaper prices. Don't miss the so-called Aeroplane Mosque, a result of the large model aeroplane perched on the fifth-floor roof. • The New Market, despite its name, is a historic market town in the area of the University. A triangle with three doors and hundreds of outlets where you can find everything at acceptable prices. In the years that followed were born other shopping centers but remains one to visit.

  • Dhaka New Market, the oldest shopping complex mostly to cater the needs of the population of Dhaka City but it is now attracting shoppers even from outside of Dhaka. One of the distinctive features of Dhaka New Market is shopping in open air and in a spacious atmosphere. The three high arched gates lead to organized rows of shops for books and stationery, watches, clocks and spectacles, leather goods and travel kits, grocery items, clothes, jewellery, electrical equipment etc and a few service shops of tailoring, fast food, photography etc. Shoppers can find most of their requirements in these shops and that’s why this is a favourite place to almost everyone who like to go for shopping. You may gain fantastic experience buying something from here. It is a good place for bargain shopping and people of all income levels can find things of their choice here. Even the merchants may serve you tea or cold drinks while you shop and your children can play around.
  • Be careful about pick pocketing, some local and lower class minded men will push you without any reason. Please bargain with a good capability. Say 1/3 of asking price. Be careful, if you have a good bargaining power you will be gainer. Don't buy any cosmetic from there. All are definitely fake. Good place for clothes. Again bargaining is the main key
  • Amazing place. There are everything you might need for your life. Great open spaces. Very moderate price range. But you have to bargain for best price. Girls like this place a lot. They sometimes come not to buy anything but to roam around. Childhood shopping place of my family.
  • This is a very large place filled with every daily life items. It is a very old market but rich in necessary goods. This place is always crowded. Compare to other markets this place is little cheaper with quality products. This is very popular place to shop clothing items. Everyone needs to aware of price of products, also have to do bargaining because the seller always try to get high price from customer.
  • Safe and secure shopping compound for veterans vendors.Old market, open sky,non a/c but comfortable for every one. Maintaining by City Corporation, wide car parking. I thoroughly enjoy here when I come to shopping. Recommended for everyone to visit this shopping compound. Thanks

Where to stay in Dhaka City

Hotels in Dhaka are among the world's most affordable, but due to a lack of tourist infrastructure you should plan ahead to avoid misunderstanding. Most of the upmarket hotels group in the downtown area, while budget hotels cluster in Old Dhaka. There is a wide range of room or apartment rentals and guesthouses, though some areas impose restrictions for renting out to foreigners. If staying long-term, explore options in Gulshan and Banani, north of town.
