Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, Dhaka City

4.5
#3 of 12 in Museums in Bangladesh
A former house of the founder of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangabandhu Memorial Museum commemorates his life and death. A visit to this museum gives you insight into the leader and his family's way of life. Go to the ground-floor guest room and see the abundant collection of family photographs dating back to the 19th century. On a grimmer note, you'll notice bloodstains from Rahman and his son's assassination in 1975 on the stairs and in the bedrooms. Outside, in the memorial garden, reflect at the large monument and view other memorabilia celebrating the history of Bangladesh. • The building of Bangabandhu Bhaban has been the private home of the first President of Bangladesh and father of the country Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Here he was assassinated with his family from the fringes of the army during a coup and after years the residence was turned into a memorial with photographs, objects that belonged to him and leaving the marks of the event. Worth seeing for its importance in local history.

Where to stay in Dhaka City

Hotels in Dhaka are among the world's most affordable, but due to a lack of tourist infrastructure you should plan ahead to avoid misunderstanding. Most of the upmarket hotels group in the downtown area, while budget hotels cluster in Old Dhaka. There is a wide range of room or apartment rentals and guesthouses, though some areas impose restrictions for renting out to foreigners. If staying long-term, explore options in Gulshan and Banani, north of town.
