Thunderball Grotto, Staniel Cay

4.7
Swim into the depths of Thunderball Grotto and discover what attracted Hollywood to this spot (bringing James Bond here in 1965), lending the rock formation its name. This cavernous beauty adopts the features of an aquatic cathedral, a shimmering limestone dome roof full of naturally formed holes allow the sun to beam through and illuminate the crystal clear waters below. Snorkel through one of the many entrances and admire the coral and brightly colored tropical fish that share your surroundings. Its important to time your visit to coincide with the tides; if you’re an inexperienced snorkeler pick up a local guide to ensure safe passage. • The tides rushing in and out of the grotto can be dangerous. Go at Slack Tide. Wear your water shoes. Take snorkel gear and underwater camera. Lots of fish. Take cheese whiz to feed them. You will be ...  more »
  • The best snorkeling ever!! Don’t miss out it may seem hard or scary but it’s not. Also definitely worth it when you inside!!  more »
  • If you're in the area, definitely stop here, and low tide is best. At low tide, you can swim into the grotto above the surface of the water. At any other tide, you will have to swim under water to fin...  more »

  • Go at low slack tide. Beautiful. Bring dry dog food in a zip lock bag, let it get soft. You will see hundreds of fish. I am cold natured and was comfortable in a full wet suit. We brought our GoPro and got great shots. When the tide starts to come back in the current is very strong.
  • I've been here many times and can't get enough. In high tide is the best, but also the most difficult to find the entrance and get inside. It is worth it though because there are many more fish inside at high tide. Low tide has its advantages if you are not a strong swimmer and just want to see inside. I personally recommend fins and snorkeling gear to really get the full experience. There is a current here, so don't be surprised.
  • Beautiful and a few fishes to see. You absolutely need a boat to get there and having a guide is better as the entrance is a bit hidden. Good swimming and a bit of snorkeling experience required as it's a confined space and it has strong current at some places.
  • This is one of the best things I've ever seen.
  • Amazing landmark with a gorgeous reef inside.
