Gold Rock Beach, Lucayan National Park

4.9
#1 of 18 in Parks in Grand Bahama Island
Secluded Gold Rock Beach is famous for its state at low tide, when its shoreline extends for yards into the sea--affording it the nickname of Grand Bahama Island's "welcome mat." A part of the national park, it lies next to the longest underground cave system in the world. Don on some sturdy shoes and venture of into the caves or bring along your snorkel and explore the crystal waters. The longer way from the parking to the beach is through the mangroves, but you can take a shortcut over the wood-slatted bridge. Bring large towels, snacks, and lots of water, since the amenities include only barbecue pits, benches, and picnic tables. • Gold Rock Beach is incredible. The sand is perfect, the marine life is abundant, and the water is clear and blue. The beach is clean and it wasn't crowded the day we visited.
  • Nice beach that wasn't very busy...at least when we were there. Wasn't much for snorkeling. Maybe we were in the wrong spot.
  • This beach can be narrow when the tide is high (i.e. not a lot of beach between the ocean water and regular land) but it is more than enough even then and is compensated for by its length - it's a very long stretch). That said, it is a beautiful beach, almost completely natural since there are no resorts around it. And I can't get over that delightful blue ocean color. All in all, a pristine, uncrowded, delightful beach!
  • Soft sand, unmolested by resorts and tourist
  • Absolutely beautiful beach

Where to stay in Grand Bahama Island

Large, well-appointed hotels and beach resorts make up the bulk of accommodations on Grand Bahama Island. These cluster along the coast south of Freeport--Lucaya Beach remains the most popular place to stay. At most of the island's accommodations, you can expect an air-conditioned room, swimming pool, complimentary breakfast, and onsite restaurants and bars. If you want to escape the crowds, consider the western tip of the island, where you can stay at a secluded luxury resort.
