(3/5 based on 70+ reviews on the web)
Delve into Preacher's Cave to see a spectacular natural wonder with skylights in the ceiling. Discovered in the 17th century, the cave once served as a shelter for Captain William Sayles and a group of Puritans, who used the cavern to hold religious services. A placard at the entrance reads, "William Sayles shipwrecked at Devil Backbone found refuge here. Sermons held 100 years." Following your exploration of the cave, you can visit some of the surrounding beaches. • A bit of the beaten path and not well signed, it's best to use GPS to find it. However, once there the history of the earliest settlers of Eleuthera is incredible.
  • This is the cave where the first English settlers in the Bahamas seeked refuge after getting shipwrecked at the Devil's Backbone reef. The cave itself is not too exciting, but it is a must-see when vi...  more »
  • This is a nice detour if you have some extra free time. Not something that I would go out of my way to see. Interesting information about the history of Eleuthera and also a lovely beach.

  • I've been to this historic site many times. It is very cool. After visiting the cave, we go straight away from the cave to the beach, which is beautiful and take a swim.
  • Preacher's Cave is considered one of the most significant points of interest on Eleuthera Island. It is the site where William Sayle, former Governor of Bermuda, led a group of about 70 Puritans to the Bahamas seeking to establish a new colony free from religious persecution. Preacher's Cave is a part of the newly formed "Heritage and Conservation Trail".
