Gaze out at the stars at the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory, 22 kilometers north of Shamakhi city centre. Reached via a scenic road leading into the Caucasus Mountains, the observatory is located high up in the settlement of Pirqulu and is the largest in the Caucasus. Named after 13th-century astronomer Nasreddin Tusi, it opened in the 1960s and was put to good use in the Soviet era. It is still operational today, and now it can also be visited. Guests can browse a small museum and take the opportunity to do some after dark stargazing.
