City Walls, Baku

Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 220 reviews on the web
Marvel at the architectural gems within City Walls, a multilayered assembly of buildings and a World Heritage Site in downtown Baku. Inhabited continuously since the Paleolithic period, this area enclosed by 12th-century defensive walls reveals layers of civilizations from Zoroastrian, Persian, Arabic, Ottoman, and Russian periods. Check out a catapult mounted on one of the semicircular defensive towers, and look for the restored 19th-century canon. Explore a labyrinth of narrow streets divided into ten neighborhoods, and tiny inner courtyards. Masterfully built mosques and madrasas form an integral part of this walled old city. Climb and walk the solid walls for photo-worthy panoramas.
