Votivkirche, Vienna

4.3
#11 of 57 in Historic Sites in Vienna
Featuring two slim spires visible from a great distance, Votivkirche serves as one of Vienna's major Gothic landmarks, known for its stained-glass windows. Commissioned immediately after a failed assassination attempt on the life of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1853, the church was finally finished nearly two decades later. Consecrated on the silver anniversary of the emperor's marriage, the structure sits across from the site of the assassination attempt. The exterior features an intricate facade embellished with sculptures, while inside you can see an eye-catching altar decorated with glass mosaics and alabaster columns. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Vienna holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Votivkirche and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Beautiful church from the outside and the inside. Unfortunately during our stay front was under renovation but the whole Church is beautiful.

Quite an interesting Church in equally interesting. It stands opposite the Sigmund Freud Park and Cafe Francaise. Moreover, and Sigmund Freud Museum is close by. The Church is richly decorated but did not know why his Frontal was obstructed. However, the towering faith in a style similar to Sagrada Familia in Spain, may please. In the back of the Church, looking from the altar towards the exit very interesting rose window stained glass.

Recommended to come to see it, since you can see quickly and there are many other sights of the city

Beautiful and magnificent. I have been there during reconstruction, but the weather was sunny and clear, so it was looking so perfect. Haven't been inside, but I know it's cool from the feedback from my brother.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
