Architectural Building Religious Site
Featured often in some of the oldest images of the city, St. Mary's on the Bank (Maria Am Gestade) represents one of Vienna's oldest and most recognizable places of worship. Consecrated in 1414, the church served as a popular spot for anglers due to its proximity to the Danube River. Today, the narrow Gothic building is best known for its ornate 56 m (180 ft) tower. Step inside to observe the imposing high altar, colorful stained glass, intricately carved statues, and 15th-century reliefs on the porticos. The grandeur and beauty of the church today make it hard to believe it once served as an arsenal and stable for Napoleon during his occupation of Vienna. • This is Am Gestade, literally means at the riverbank. There used to be a port at the foot of the steps and the steps lead up to the Maria am Gestade, or St Mary on the Banks. Right at the top of the stairs is Maria am Gestade, one of the oldest churches in Vienna, built in the era of Gothic architecture. As with many old churches, Maria am Gestade is built on one of the oldest sites in the city before the advent of more modern architecture that surrounds the area. Yes, most churches in Europe looked the same because they are all gothic. Constructed during the Middle-Ages before the Renaissance and before more modern styles took its place. Still, it always amazes me at the detail that goes into constructing this, down to the small sculptures and ornaments that often is found on its facade.
  • Worth stopping by this nice gothic church
  • beautiful church, very quiet, an unknown jewel
  • It's a non-PO came to the Cathedral in Sunrise chuckles in a quiet relaxing atmosphere without a lot of tourists to La nice ㅎ ㅎ

  • On the foundations of a Roman sanctuary and a Romanesque church 1414 accomplished Gothic building with a steep narrow west facade and a filigree Spire, as well as one of the oldest churches of Vienna and the Church of the Danube boatmen. The Interior offers a contrast between the dark narrow nave and the bright wide choir. In the altar are kept the relics of St. Klemens Maria Hofbauer (Vienna city patron).
