Rathaus, Vienna
(4.7/5 based on 3,600 reviews on the web)
The capital city's Neo-Gothic city hall, Rathaus, serves as the house of municipal government. Built between the 1872 and 1883 by Friedrich Schmidt, the building resembles a Gothic cathedral. Front and center is the 98 m (321 ft) tall tower with the statue of a medieval knight perched on top. Rathausmann, who has become an icon of Vienna, is inspired by the armor of Emperor Maximilian I. Climb 331 steps to reach the top of city hall's tower and take in the view of Vienna below. Inside, explore the council chamber, festival hall, senate chamber, grand staircase, stone halls, and coat of arms halls. Audio guides are available in English. Put Rathaus into our Vienna trip generator and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Although not as large as the one in Munich or Nuremburg, or even close, it is worth a visit as it is beautiful and festive with lots of lights and stands and food.
  • Beautifully lit up the whole square is the advent period. Skating is great for lovers of skating rink

  • One of the “hearts” of Vienna. In summer the film festival takes place. It is really magic to watch films in an “outdoor cinema” like this! Additionally, if you become hungry, then you are lucky. There are a lot of small restaurants that offer different kind of food. You can find Hungarian, American, Greek, Mexican, Arabic, Chinese food! You take your dish with the delicious food to an outdoor desk nearby or even to the park that is beside the restaurants. When you finish, a special service rapidly collects the empty dish and everything becomes clean and tidy.
  • Great building indeed, really imposing and inspiring. You can see it far away and it usually hosts different events in its surroundings.
  • Vienna Jazz festival: some concerts take place here.
  • Although summer is beautifully recommend Vienna in time of Christmas. Great ice rink, stalls with food and hot wine, and of course fighting Strauss ...
  • Very cool building reminding me of the Canadian parliament with a gothic twist. A must for vienna and if you go in the winter like we did there was a skating rink! Such a cool experience
