Rathaus, Vienna

4.7
#10 of 498 in Things to do in Vienna
The capital city's Neo-Gothic city hall, Rathaus, serves as the house of municipal government. Built between the 1872 and 1883 by Friedrich Schmidt, the building resembles a Gothic cathedral. Front and center is the 98 m (321 ft) tall tower with the statue of a medieval knight perched on top. Rathausmann, who has become an icon of Vienna, is inspired by the armor of Emperor Maximilian I. Climb 331 steps to reach the top of city hall's tower and take in the view of Vienna below. Inside, explore the council chamber, festival hall, senate chamber, grand staircase, stone halls, and coat of arms halls. Audio guides are available in English. What a huge building this is. The spires tower upwards. Easy to walk around and view. Unfortunately we ran out of time to enter.  more »

Beautiful gothic building, impressive! We arrived at this beautiful square during the film festival, which with all the locals to eat assembled for the occasion, and the stage for projection, gave the new town hall, a very distinctive and international flair

Here, you can feel right, and dwell time. First visit the magnificent Town Hall and then stroll through the Park. The foodie/film fest in the Park is worthwhile in any case. Well attended during the day but at night packed. Food (at the austr. foodie stand - grilled tuna avocado & Salsa a dream!) and Aperol spritz at the people watching - what if you want more?

Take a quick trip to this beautifully designed city hall. I appreciated the view and just sat there in amazement, wondering how someone could create something that beautiful. Would highly recommend.

It's a impressiv building with a big square in its front. I liked the massive body of it in the contrast with the slim towers on its top.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
