Rathaus, Vienna

4.7
#10 of 730 in Things to do in Vienna
The capital city's Neo-Gothic city hall, Rathaus, serves as the house of municipal government. Built between the 1872 and 1883 by Friedrich Schmidt, the building resembles a Gothic cathedral. Front and center is the 98 m (321 ft) tall tower with the statue of a medieval knight perched on top. Rathausmann, who has become an icon of Vienna, is inspired by the armor of Emperor Maximilian I. Climb 331 steps to reach the top of city hall's tower and take in the view of Vienna below. Inside, explore the council chamber, festival hall, senate chamber, grand staircase, stone halls, and coat of arms halls. Audio guides are available in English. • What a huge building this is. The spires tower upwards. Easy to walk around and view. Unfortunately we ran out of time to enter.  more »
  • Beautiful gothic building, impressive! We arrived at this beautiful square during the film festival, which with all the locals to eat assembled for the occasion, and the stage for projection, gave the new town hall, a very distinctive and international flair

  • Here, you can feel right, and dwell time. First visit the magnificent Town Hall and then stroll through the Park. The foodie/film fest in the Park is worthwhile in any case. Well attended during the day but at night packed. Food (at the austr. foodie stand - grilled tuna avocado & Salsa a dream!) and Aperol spritz at the people watching - what if you want more?

  • One of the “hearts” of Vienna. In summer the film festival takes place. It is really magic to watch films in an “outdoor cinema” like this! Additionally, if you become hungry, then you are lucky. There are a lot of small restaurants that offer different kind of food. You can find Hungarian, American, Greek, Mexican, Arabic, Chinese food! You take your dish with the delicious food to an outdoor desk nearby or even to the park that is beside the restaurants.
  • I was at the Vienna City Hall in the Christmas Market and I was very impressed, here you can feel the magic of Christmas holidays . There were over 100 wooden houses with Christmas decorations, traditional food and hot drinks (hot wine, Punch, eggnog), toys, sweets, clothes. When the evening comes and all the lights are turned on you can feel the true magic of Christmas spirit.
  • A beautiful building that serve as city hall, overlooking a large arena used for musical shows in the summer and the place for the biggest and most famous Christmas market in Vienna.
  • Amazing construction Gothic architecture of Friedrich von Schmidt. you can find out about all the city's issues. There is also a tourist office. It is graphic and Christmas shopping that is done outdoors.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
