#5 of 105 in Museums in Vienna
Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • Didn't get a chance to go in, although I have researched and received the best information. Its façade, itself, is already big, beautiful and impressive enough to dazzle the tourist.

  • Very interesting museum. All collections are really interesting. As I'm interested in science, I really enjoyed it. There isn't air condition so it's very hot during the summer.  more »
  • Very interesting with children. Many exhibits. There's a real inhabited Beehive also to admire.

  • Its a really huge museum and needs an entire day to visit all its rooms and floors. The tickets per adult are 10€ and u can find an audio guide at the information desk for 4€ but every part of the museum have both English and German explanation on every peace. After u bought tickets there's a room where u can put ur coats and bags or stuff and lock it to be free to enjoy the museum without excessive clothing specially this time of year. This museum can be really interesting and very educational for children. The museum has 2 main floors and a small room in third floor full of amazing stuff to visit. There's even a cafe/restaurant in second floor where u can treat yourself with some coffee or something. And on the outside there's a Christmas bazaar that offer coffee, snacks and lots of stuff to buy.
  • The most amazing museum I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. The building itself is beautiful and the artwork is breathtaking. The displays are incredible too, preserved animals that have been on display for over 100 years, the opportunity to touch a genuine fossil and meteorite and gigantic minerals and crystals. The only negative for me, an English speaker, was that quite a few of the displays were only in German. But that's understandable considering its in a non English speaking country. And not much is lost without the translation.
  • Exceptional museum, one of the best I've ever been in. There's a huge selection of fossils and minerals on display and each exhibit has an English label on it. The museum is also gigantic and an afternoon wasn't enough to inspect everything that's displayed. 5 stars!
  • Beautiful and well organized exhibitions ranging from gemstones from all over the earth, models and fossils of early creatures, life-like wax sculptures of early man, and an animatronic T-Rex! The top floor has stuffed (taxidermy) animals from around the world showcasing varieties within a species.
  • The exhibition is fairly old school and somewhat dated. The building itself is gorgeous and vast. The attendants at the front desk were you extremely helpful and knowledgeable about pending presentations and/ or necessary reservations. The main drawback of this museum compared to more modern museums is - IMHO - the lack of interactive exhibits.
