Natural History Museum
Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • Really huge and interesting collection with a long history. Nevertheless very nice and modern presentation of special aspects, e.g. human evolution, meteorites. Additionally interesting changing exhibitions, events and talks. Also suitable for children with special guided tours.
  • The Museum is astonishing. Highly recommended. Huge variety of everything a life can handle and you'll gain plenty of knowledge from the origin of life to myriad types of birds and animals.. simply amazing!
  • Definitely worth seeing. It's a historical building (emperor Franz Joseph I ordered to build it) and there are many cool things to see in there. Depending on your preference you might find different things interesting, e.g. for me the meteorite collection (one of the biggest in the world) and the various minerals were the most interesting. But there are also dinosaurs and many other things. I'd like to add that they do a lot to make it interesting for children too! Admission charges are rather low (also compared to the KHM on the opposite side) for such a famous sight.
  • Just astonishing. The building itself is an artistic masterpiece, and the collections are great. You can find minerals, bugs and animals from all around the world, including one of the few remaining sea cow skeletons in the world. Also, while you walk from collection to collection, you can enjoy the architecture and classic frescoes on the walls and ceiling, which makes the visit even more interesting. If you get tired after a couple of hours, there's a café inside where you can order food and drinks while you admire the majestic staircase hall.
  • A big fan of natural history museums, I loved my experience here. There is a lot to see. It is not as large as the Smithsonian or the New York Museum of Natural History in the US, but it is amazing nonetheless and made my trip to Vienna all the more amazing. It is also nice that everyone under the age of 19 has free entrance.
