#5 of 110 in Museums in Vienna
Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • Worth going to in order to see The Venus which was much coller than I thought it would be up close in person.  more »
  • By nighter in full days. Well done and organized, understandable even for those who don't read German. It is one of the museums which stay in Vienna!

  • This institution is an old school natural history museum with an impressive collection on view. A notable item on display is a Venus figurine of Upper Paleolithic age from the Willendorf site in Austria. It is 11 cm tall and made from limestone. The figurine was covered with red ochre and buried ca. 25,000 years old. The museum also has meteorites (a fabulous world-class collection), minerals, fossils, and stuffed animals of all kinds. In addition there are Egyptian, Roman, and Greek archaeological materials on display.
  • Great museum. Ground floor collection shows history of the earth, it's geology and life right from formation to modern humans. Second floor has a great collection of seemingly every animal that has ever been stuffed. Entry is cheap for Vienna at 5 euros for students, and 10 for adults for at least 3/4 hours of learning. Restaurant expensive, but food okay and fast service.
  • Spent 4 hours here with my 7 and 9 years old sons, we absolutely loved it! Will come back soon. Thousands of stones and animals to see, in every room there is something interactive for the kids. Entrance fee is 10 € for adults, 5€ for kids. Parking is for free on Sat and Sun in Vienna
  • Amazing museum! We spent 4 hours and could have spent longer if our feet weren't hurting. Definitely worth €10. Highly recommend.
  • Stunning museum, a true highlight of Vienna. The meteorite collection alone was worth it, and be sure to block out lots of time to properly explore. Text is mostly German, so get an audio guide (or guess a lot like we did). In case the collections weren't interesting enough, the building itself warrants a close look in every room - just gorgeous!

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
