Natural History Museum Museum
Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • In this museum are present unique species at animal level of stones and crystals. Brings to us the distant, history of our species, than we are today. I advise this visit the kids and grown-ups.

  • The dinosaur wing is very nice, but the rest of the museum belongs in a museum! It seems like it has not been updated in decades, and does not have any air conditioning, which was almost unbearable in...  more »

  • This museum is a must see and kids under 19 are free so entry is pretty cheap. The building is magnificent and if there was nothing inside it would still be worth visiting to have a look. The exhibits are pretty amazing and kept in such good condition. The African bull elephant has to be seen to be believed, the sheer size of it is amazing! There is a nice cafe at the top and plenty of restrooms throughout. Wear comfy shoes as you will walk a lot!
  • Great for fans or rocks, minerals and other natural gemstones. They have the biggest collection I have seen. Great collection of animals and insects. I don't generally like museums but this one I did. Went on a Thursday an hour and a hal before closing and was the perfect time to go was very quiet and some rooms we had all to ourselves
  • The museum is really worth visiting. The collection of animals is amazing. The kids will also totally enjoy the exhibition. The building itself is one of the loveliest in Vienna. The cafa on the top floor is also nice to visit.
  • A beautiful building and pleasant interior. A large collection of animals and birds. The section showing artifacts from ancient times is also brilliant. There is a large collection of skulls from various hominid groups. Worth spending 2hrs but may take longer.
  • Very educational and wonderful. Beautiful place. Personally I believe it is very important to understand or have an idea of, at least, what the history of earth is, how life started to thrive and how it developed over the millions of years.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
