#5 of 112 in Museums in Vienna
Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • The NHM is definitely one of the most famous museums in Vienna and that right! At the beginning of the magnificent architecture of the Roman Empire is one. Although I was there already more often, new fascinating details every time notice me. Each floor shows different species of plants, as well as cultural relics. After a tour, you can set on the top floor in the cosy café. In any case, you should take 2 days to explore this great Museum, because it is relatively large.

  • We were there mainly to take part in the newly offered leadership of the roof. I've been to the Museum years ago and honestly, so boring I hadn't remembered. The architecture is really great, but the exhibition itself will quickly get bored. Little interesting things, plentiful shells, bones, insects... sorry but there you must be already a fanatic to see it all. Unfortunately I must join here my speakers. The masses of children annoy simply just tremendously. Especially when they are so small that they ever don't care about such things. And then the cry goes off because they fear the giant stuffed animals. So, parents should times turn her brain. The roof lead is worth a visit. It has a magnificent view over Vienna. Worth mentioning is the Museum is not air conditioned, i.e. at temperatures such as now in August, it breaks in there really.

  • If you're looking for fancy animatronics and interactive exhibits and such, you'll probably be disappointed. If you're like me and like going through loads of animals and minerals on display, you'll l...  more »

  • Really nice place for adults and kids. Lifts are a bit oddly placed but still accessible for those with buggies. We went around in about 2 hours, you could spend much longer there if you want. It was a hot day though, and inside the museum was quite warm. The animal section is really good for kids as the Vienna museum has more animals than any other natural history museum I've been too (including London's).
  • This is a thrilling natural museum. Everything is placed in good order. You literally make a brief travel through history. I founded there more than I expected. Reserve for this visit at least half a day. It is never too much time to spend there as there infinitely details.
  • This is a very amazing museum. Best museum i ever visit. I would recommend everyone to come to this place. It is worth every minute. Do not spend much time at the rock section because there are so many interested sections that you also should join. Bring your children to spend a quality time on holiday together!!!
  • It's an interesting place where you get to see a lot of items. It has rooms dedicated to all sort of animals and some of them are even extinct. Other parts of the museum are dedicated to the human history, in others you will find a wide variety of rocks and of course, you'll get to see rooms dedicated to dinosaurs. Inside the building there is also a digital planetarium that is open according to a schedule. It's a little bit sad to see all those stuffed animals, but once you get over this you'll definitely enjoy your visit. The only problem I encountered was the fact that I visited this museum at the end of May and the heat created some discomfort. I'm not sure if they have AC.
  • A very nice and big museum which is found in the heart of Vienna, very near other attractions. It is opposite another building which is identical to it from the outside. Once inside the building there are alot to see, a big number of rooms having different items, from minerals like gold to replica of animals like moving dinosaurs. The place is well kept and you need some two hours to visit the whole place. It is ideal for both adults and kids. Worth a visit.
