Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. • There are so many good museums in Vienna. I was grateful to have chosen this one. The entry way and majestic stairways with enormous murals are visually stunning, I doubt any of my photos do them...  more »
  • This is mainly fossils, rocks and taxidermied animals. The one in London is a lot better. There really isn't a large variety in there. It is worth going for small children. If you have...  more »

  • An amazing place to visit. Let's be honest and not every room is interesting, many rooms with only stones or classic animals, sometimes descriptions are not translated in English. But the place is magical. The interior is so clean and beautiful. The stairs are like a king castle. Rooms about dinosaurs or spaces are interactive and really interesting. Place to go definitely.
  • Very cool museum. Great atmosphere. Probably one of the top 10 natural history museums in the world. Large collection of all kinds of animals, including dinosaur fossils. Good for: Anyone interested in natural history. Bad for: Tourists who want to see information that's only available in Austria (of course the building/architecture/atmosphere is still absolutely amazing). This museum is for teaching you about nature, not Austria.
  • Absolutely worth the price of admission. Two HUGE floors that are mind blowing. The gems and minerals alone took us 90 min to rush through. The taxidermy sections of the birds and insects was beautifully done. The dinosaur fossils were presented well and frankly more than I expected from a small museum here in eastern Europe. Make sure to use your discount from the Tourist Pass Card if you have it. Even the cafe was reasonably priced.
  • I appreciated all the taxidermy work and life-size scale of other animals. My children enjoy led it too! Plenty of room to find a seat to rest your feet. Inside architecture just as beautiful. Great stop!
  • It’s very interesting and modern museum. Price for entrance was 12 euros per person (2020). And it’s not so expensive for such a huge and old place with modern technology to interact visitors. Dinosaurs and realistic copies of prehistoric people with amazing details and quality are worth to go here. I definitely recommend to visit this place!
