MERKUR Hoher Markt, Vienna

(3.1/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
At the heart of a vibrant market stands MERKUR Hoher Markt, an Art Nouveau clock that tells more than the time. Built between 1911 and 1914, the ornately decorated, gold-accented piece is the creation of painter and sculptor Franz von Matsch, and it makes up part of the bridge connecting two parts of the Anker Insurance Company building. At the stroke of every hour, a historical figure crosses the bridge; at noon--the time the clock is most sought out--all 12 figures emerge (including Marcus Aurelius, Rudolf von Habsburg, and Joseph Haydn), accompanied by organ music from each era. Following the performance, browse the market for a great selection of fresh bakery, produce, and deli groceries. • With black and green colours this clock worth (not far from Graben). I have not seen if the characters were moving as in Prague. Anyway bravo for the hotel nearby who has coordinated its stores with the colors of the clock to not her apart. See

  • On the oldest square of Vienna, you will discover this curiosity of style "Art nouveau" (made between 1911 and 1917) which dominates the square to the level of a bridge that spans a lane to connect two buildings. This carillon lined with mosaics has been completely and beautifully restored a dozen years ago. Each of the 12 characters in copper that parade has its own dedicated music (Mozart for the Archduchess Marie-Thérèse for example). It is emblematic figures of history, particularly that of Vienna and Austria, having lived in different periods (prince Eugene of Savoy, Joseph Haydn, Maximilien Ier, etc.). They follow one another in chronological order then perform a procession together at noon. They are identified on a plate at the foot of the work. Don't forget to pass under the gallery and contemplate the monument of the back also.
