Kirche am Steinhof, Vienna

4.6
Explore the stained-glass windows, mosaics, sculptural angels, and chandeliers at Kirche am Steinhof, the Roman Catholic oratory of the neighboring psychiatric hospital. The last commissioned work by Otto Wagner, the church is considered one of the most important Art Nouveau churches in the world. Wagner incorporated numerous features related to the church's function within the asylum, such as limited sharp edges, rounded corners, and the separation of the priest's area from that of the patients. Look up at the gold dome, covered with 2 kg (4.4 lbs) of gold plate over the copper roof during a structural renovation. Private tours in English can be booked in advance, but the church has limited hours, so call ahead to confirm. Note that the church is accessible by bus but requires a steep walk, so wear comfortable shoes. • The Church is a dream from the outside as well as inside and you have to really even saw them. It operates a beautiful piece with the bus and then uphill through the grounds of the Otto Wagner hospital, but it really pays off. You should take time to make work all the impressions.

  • An absolute "must see". This hidden gem of Vienna is not something tourists often visit since it is a bit away from the city center, but is is worth visiting. The church represents jewel of Viennese secession style and the hospital area is a historic monument itself.Do walk around the green area, it is amazing and popular with locals. 48A bus goes from U3 Ottakring and stops just in front of the main entrance of hospital. Hospital grounds are public area and are open during the day.
  • Another pearl from Otto Wagner. We didnt get the chance to see it inside, thou the building is also quite an experience seen from the outside.
  • A masterpiece of Otto Wagner. It's a shame the church is so long way away from downtown and few people see it.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
