Karlsplatz, Vienna

4.1
#62 of 494 in Things to do in Vienna
Pause to enjoy the bustling metropolis at Karlsplatz, one of Vienna's hubs of activity. This lively square surrounded by historical buildings stands immediately next to the U-Bahn subway station. Of particular interest is the picturesque old subway station, preserved despite its retirement. Note its intricate and elegant design featuring gold accents, hand-painted details, and an arched roof--true to the Jugendstil architecture style. The square is also home to a large water pool, the Vienna city museum, and Karlskirche--a magnificent 18th-century Baroque cathedral that towers over the city square. Stroll the large park and stop at one of the many restaurants and cafes in the area for a bite to eat. You might also catch one of the local events hosted on the plaza. By day it is a beautiful square, close to the market and full of life. In the evening, however, is beautiful. Viennese and tourists sitting on the edge of the fountain by the Church (dedicated to St Charles) and chatting softly, almost anxious to ruin the mood brooding

Very centrally located. Beautiful, large fountains. In winter, a large Christmas market with beautiful lighting and good Pünschen is here. Always very well attended.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
