Vienna used to a conception of architecture, which finds its akme in imperial palaces and noble residences. But, beware, a very interesting area of study (that has no equal in large European cities) is the one dedicated to the design of large housing complexes, the so-called hof, impressive buildings, often with a tree-lined Court inside, which proudly bear the name on the front of the complex and sometimes of the architect and the date of manufacture. Among them the most famous is the karl-max-hof, on the road from downtown leads to grinzing. With over 1300 apartments, a long façade lightened by Duotone of painting, is the most important monument of the so-called "red vienna" of the 1920s. The quality of living in vienna is quite high: the city ranks with melbourne and vancouver la palma, the world's most livable cities, and this is not just about the monuments and works of art, but also housing, large blocks of flats owned by the city, voted to make life more comfortable for workers, testimony of designing great architects. Deserves to be seen and to think about it.

Few Western cities can boast a beautiful tribute to Karl Marx. This housing was a hotbed of fighting against the rise of Nazism in Austria in the 1930s. It is the testimony of the history of a city that has always been his model of social diversity. Besides, the HLM cites are everywhere, next to the more prestigious than Uptown monuments.

On Sundays between 12 and 16: 00, the exhibition is open in the signposted laundromat. Entrance 3,-€ per adult, plus €2 If you take the lead. The whole thing is organized by volunteers and makes a professional impression. You get a detailed insight into the housing construction in Vienna to the Republican period and details of the so-called "Red Vienna". For me as a non-Austrians sometimes difficult to understand, since I lack background knowledge. But interesting nonetheless. Unfortunately, it is somewhat remote from the usual tourist paths. But the people there make it very

One of the most famous "Gemeindebauten" (city tenements). "Karl-Marx-Hof was well known during the February Uprising (German: Februaraufstand) of the 1934 Austrian Civil War (German: Österreichischer Bürgerkrieg). Those insurgents engaged in the revolt barricaded themselves inside the building and were forced to surrender after the Austrian army, the police, and the Austrofascist paramilitary Heimwehr bombarded the site regardless of the unarmed dwellers, mainly worker families, with light artillery.[1] During the Anschluss, Karl-Marx-Hof was renamed Heiligenstädter Hof, but took its original name back in 1945"(Wikipedia)

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
