Kahlenberg, Vienna

4.5
#1 of 6 in Nature in Vienna
Hike and cycle around Kahlenberg, a hill lying in the Vienna Woods and offering views of the entire city. After acquiring it in 1628, Ferdinand II subsequently allowed the construction of a hermitage for an order of Catholic hermits. Explore the nearby church, enjoy a drink and food at the surrounding cafes and restaurants, and tour the neighboring vineyard. This hill can be reached by car or by bus. There is ample parking and public toilets are available for a fee. Using our custom trip planner, Vienna attractions like Kahlenberg can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Nice view of the whole Vienna. The access road up quite often narrow, winding and you need to go slow. :-) We went there in the evening and the city really was shining beautifully. There are two freely accessible patios, one with a telescope. There is also a nice hotel with a good restaurant.

  • On a bitterly cold winter day, this is still worth the journey out. Whilst we didn't take any of the many pathways through the hillside, vineyards or woods, our 45 minute journey by public transport s...  more »
  • The Kahlenberg mountain is located in the forest of Vienna and is one of the favourite places of the Viennese to tour. With over four hundred eighty meters high, offers stunning views. On clear days you can see the whole city.

  • The view of the city is absolutely beautiful! It is a bit far from the city center, but I highly recommend going here.
  • Great view on Vienna. Go up by public bus transport (from Heiligenstadt) or by car or hike (bike = very hard tour on the road). Coffeehouse on the top where you will hardly get a tabl. You can visit the church or walk down to the Theresienwiese (green) with a small Restaurant next to it (God for drinks and snacks).

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
