Hofburg Palace, Vienna

4.6
#2 of 474 in Museums in Austria
Once home to Vienna's monarchy, Hofburg Palace gives a fascinating look into imperial life through a display of personal items of former Habsburg monarchs. Along with the historical museums, the palace--called the Vienna Hofburg--now houses the president of Austria and offices of the federal government. In the Imperial Apartments, you'll discover the apartments of Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth. Visit the Imperial Silver Collection for a glimpse into the lavish lengths to which the monarchs went to entertain. You'll see about 7,000 relics of the imperial dining culture, such as exquisite kitchen linens, the imperial table, and ornate centerpieces. The Sisi Museum features more than 300 personal items of Empress Elisabeth. Through her parasols, beauty recipes, and death mask, you'll gain an understanding of this often-misunderstood monarch. • Must see! It's a magnificent, glorious chain of buildings! A lot of history. You can walk around or throw the arcs, because all the building are connecting with each other. Park is nice.  more »
  • For Cech has called for Justice c. k. monarchy specific charm. It is worth to go through each of the courtyard, but I recommend a visit to some of these exposures.

  • A very nice place for family, adults and groups. Going there you definitely need to be packed with a tourguide or self prepared information - full of history and stories. I can easily spend a full day there. 3 great museums, lots of statues and green places. Also you can rent a fiaker (a horse carriage with a tour guide, costs around 80-100 euros for 1 hour). I highly recommend it!
  • Magnificent building with amazing statues and bust mounted on the walls above windows. Could you spend some time study the bust as there are many that go around the building. The statues in the front entrance show different costumes worn through the ages. This is a must visit if enjoy architecture and art in the form of statues.
  • Come and just immerse yourself in wonder. Your then see the amazing horses. Take a stroll. Come back at night for a different time of music and enchantment.
  • Toured the Hofburg Palace from the outside during the day and went to a concert in the evening by the resident orchestra. It was wonderful! Mozart and Strauss done in opera, ballet, musical comedy and great classical music. The concert was in the former presentation room, all marble and crystal. Acoustics were absolutely perfect and for being surrounded by stone there was no echo. There are concerts held all over Vienna but if given the opportunity, immerse yourself in one in the Hofburg!
  • Very enjoyable exhibit. I visited early on a Saturday in November and really enjoyed that it was not very crowded and quiet.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
