  • Expected me a longer Gallery, it is very short and there is just nothing (only a cafe as I can remember and little else).

  • Freyung is a triangular square within the Innere Stadt district of Vienna and off this runs a wonderfully ornate glass roof passageway known as the Freyung Passage. It is lined from one end to the oth...  more »
  • It is rather hidden somewhere in the city but the truth is that you can not miss it. There is a beautiful fountain in it

  • So cool. Remind me of Brussel or Milan. More Brussel.
  • Great place to escape from the heat and enjoy some beautiful shops.
  • I like the unique stored inside this building. We enjoy the food and the songs as well.
  • Wonderful palace with a historical and hidden passage full of diverse upscale stores, bars and restaurants.
  • Step inside Palais Ferstel and you’ll find yourself not just at a cafe, but an entire shopping arcade. It’s not a standard issue mall packed with the usual chain stores but small boutiques and cafes lined up the passage, enticing you with delicious bites, shinny shopping treats and fabulous interiors. Reminds me a little of arcades in Italy, which is not surprising considering the inspiration behind its design is Venetian. The Palais was formerly the Austro-Hungarian National Bank and Stock Exchange where trades in government bonds were conducted to raise money for empire finances. Bombed and damaged during the war, it has since been fully restored to its full splendour and named after its architect as the Palais Ferstel. Out of sight in the staterooms upstair, I hear people can actually rent the Palais for events. Imagine throwing a party in a beautiful Viennese building, only it would no longer be a party, but it would be a bonafide ball. In the middle of the passage stands the Fountain of Danube Sprites, within a octagonal space that draws light from its glass roof. The Ferstel Passage will take you from Cafe Central all the way to Freyung Square on the other side.

Where to stay in Vienna

As a former imperial capital, Vienna is full of lavish hotels reminiscent of the city’s royal past. If you’re traveling on a budget, it’s not hard to find hotels for a more affordable price. Consider staying in the Innere Stadt, or First District, if you only have a short time in town, as you’ll be within easy walking distance to many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Outside of the central core, Leopoldstadt, or Second District, lines the Danube and offers peaceful walks through tree-lined paths. For shopaholics, Mariahilf, or Sixth District, is a central neighborhood with busy shopping streets and lively markets.
