Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof), Vienna

At Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof), see how the city of music built monumental tombs for some of the world's best composers. Landscape architects Karl Jonas Mylius and Alfred Friedrich Bluntschli designed the cemetery in 1870. This final resting place for people of all religions spreads across 2.5 sq km (620 acres). Take a tour with an audio guide and check out the most interesting spots: honorary graves, a church, presidential crypt, Mozart cenotaph, War Memorial, and Park of Peace and Power. Take a car or a public "cemetery bus" line to see more spots, and visit the graves of famous composers Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Strauss. • Amazing place for an afternoon walk or run. Definitely recommend looking at a list of people and the coordinates where they are buried before heading there.  more »
  • Before we went there I wasn't sure if it was worth it because it's a cemetary. It is worth it. It's very nice to walk around here because the nature's beautiful and it's very peaceful. Must do while.....  more »
  • This is where Beethoven and Mozart are buried. While it is a beautiful calm place, there is zero accommodation for anyone who is not literate in Deutsch. I would encourage you to visit, but plan...  more »

  • Great thing to do in Vienna on a Sunday when not much else is open. The cemetery is huge and provides a beautiful stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Go to Gate 2 and the graves of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert will be on the left hand side straight in in group 32A. Many of the tombstones are works of art.
  • ARRIVING in Vienna on a Sunday = not much open, nothing much to do. THANK GOODNESS! A quick, inexpensive tram ride took us to Central Cemetery on this gorgeous sunny Sunday, walking through the park like atmosphere we saw the graves of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahams, Strauss and more. Many of these tombs are spectacular works of art. Secret! One can take a carriage ride through the cemetery. Bonus! The cafe was open, we had a lovely dessert and a couple of glasses of wine.
  • This is a place where you can get lost, both literally and figuratively speaking. The Central Cemetery of Vienna is huge. At 2.5 sq. km., it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. Also, the names on the tombstones can make you dizzy, whatever sector you are interested in. There are signs scattered around the cemetery showing the location of the most prominent names to be found. You could probably spend a whole day wandering aimlessly among the graves in this very serene environment.
  • Fascinating place to spend a few hours with fameous musicians, scientists, philosophers, philosophers and many solid citizens of Vienna.
  • Europe biggest graveyard, somehow fascinating, even beautiful and strange altogether. Visit the graves of famous people, musicians and politicians. Some places however remind me about Michael Jackson’s music video thriller. It’s so huge you might use a bicycle or car to move around.
