St. Peter's Abbey (Stift St. Peter), Salzburg

4.7
#6 of 29 in Historic Sites in Salzburg
Religious Site Historic Site
At St. Peter's Abbey (Stift St. Peter), see how this medieval monastery served as the home to Benedictine monks for more than 1,000 years. Built about 696 CE, it lays claim to being the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world. St. Rupert founded the monastery at the site of a Late Antique church. Enter the abbey church to see how the Romanesque facade transforms into a Rococo interior. You can view the organs at which Mozart's wife, Constanze, sang at the premiere of his Great Mass in C Minor. Look for the rock tomb--the original tomb of St. Rupert--next to his altar. Check out the shrine under the main altar, which stores most of Rupert′s relics. • I visited the city with my family and it pains me to say but I was very disappointed in not being able to visit this church because there were evidence of a concert and even though they were over the Church has remained closed to the public and the people who ran the event apart from a girl were very very rude and have more than shame on ... x tourists

  • the set is very beautiful and we had the opportunity to have a view from above during our tour of the Palace, which only reinforces our impression.

  • A monument not to be missed, absolutely stunning. We went there on Sunday morning just at the end of the mass, what makes that we could see it illuminated a few moments. Splendid.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
