St. Peter's Abbey (Stift St. Peter), Salzburg

4.5
At St. Peter's Abbey (Stift St. Peter), see how this medieval monastery served as the home to Benedictine monks for more than 1,000 years. Built about 696 CE, it lays claim to being the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world. St. Rupert founded the monastery at the site of a Late Antique church. Enter the abbey church to see how the Romanesque facade transforms into a Rococo interior. You can view the organs at which Mozart's wife, Constanze, sang at the premiere of his Great Mass in C Minor. Look for the rock tomb--the original tomb of St. Rupert--next to his altar. Check out the shrine under the main altar, which stores most of Rupert′s relics. • Very nice this Cathedral, you should look at all, if you've been there. Less for the gold, but the murals are beautiful.

  • Hard to find the words to describe how beautiful this old church is... suggest just sitting inside for long awhile to enjoy the beauty and the peacefulness.  more »
  • The interior of the abbey is beautiful and is free unless you wish to give a donation to the church.  more »

  • Could not have imagined a better, more romantic place to celebrate the Christmas season. Our meals -- Christmas turkey (Austrian style) and the roast duck -- were perfect! Beef tartar starter was delicious too! The service was unhurried and friendly. In a word, impeccable. Our favorite place in Salzburg!
  • An altercation here the day after Christmas: My mother had paid for a drink and specifically asked if she could give a deposit for the mug at a kiosk here operated by the restaurant. This lady at the kiosk said OK and then asked for an extra 3 euros for the deposit. She even wrote it down. After we had a lovely lunch inside the restaurant, my mother returned the mug to the lady at the kiosk but she wouldn’t give back my mom’s money, claimed it never happened, dismissed my mom entirely, kept speaking German etc. Her boss was of no help. My dad, sister, mom, aunt and I spent 30 minutes explaining what happened and this lady just kept denying it. Finally we went to the supervisor of the restaurant who reprimanded the lady, gave us our money back, but said that she still claimed that we were “wrong.” This was obviously not about the money. It was about bad practice — and especially towards tourists. It didn’t help that this assistant to the lady kept trying to grab my phone when he thought I was taking a picture of them. While the supervisor partially corrected the situation despite the language barrier, he really should have apologized on behalf of the restaurant and the lady. Instead, he just wanted to end the scene that was created, raised his voice at me and casually suggested that it was a defeat on our part and that we should just leave. We had spent a lovely 2 hours eating lunch there for 6 people, and it ended with a battle that lasted and wasted 30 minutes of our time. We left effectively feeling violated and completely disregarded by the Austrian staff. My advice is to avoid this place if you want to be treated with respect.
  • I enjoyed the Mozart dinner accompanied with the 3 course dinner in between arias and classical pieces as a birthday treat. It was such an amazing experience - the perfect thing for true lovers of classical music and Mozart and of fine Austrian dining!
  • Huge waste of time and money... how come such a “classy” restaurant serve red wine cold.. almost at 12degrees.. New Years set menu was very ordinary and even beef fillet was not cooked properly and overall dishes were not reasonably delicious... The only positive thing about the restaurant is the staff which was very polite and friendly.. this place is not even touristic...
  • We came here after hearing about it from a friend despite reading mixed reviews. We ordered the 3 course and 5 course fixed menus for dinner. I never would've ordered risotto (I never liked it before) and would not have ordered chicken either. However we both felt we tasted the best risotto ever and the best chicken ever. Chicken was moist, flavorful and complex with a nice crispy skin. Service was excellent and our waiter gave us the recipe for the chicken. Our 11 and 13 year old sons loved the lamb as well. Of course the ambience was great too. Overall it was a very memorable meal that we will all remember.
