Built as a summer day residence for Markus Sittikus (who was both a prince and an archbishop), Schloss Hellbrunn is famous for its trick fountains. The palace was built from 1613 to 1619 as a place of celebration. Sittikus designed the fountains and water-powered figures in the palace's park to entertain and confuse his guests. The trick fountains spray at seemingly random moments, so be prepared to get a little bit wet. Visit the grottos to see representations of Greek mythology, and watch the water-powered show of Perseus freeing Andromeda and Apollo flaying Marsyas. Walk through the palace to get a feel for how the prince and his noble guests celebrated. The park was designed as a show of contrasts of light and dark, fire and water. Schloss Hellbrunn reviews
The visit was included in the Salzburg Card. Public transport: bus 25 takes you there. To be combined with a visit to the zoo and a viewing of the Sound of Music gazebo (you don't have to pay to see..... more »
Very friendly and dedicated staff, different from what I experienced at Festung Hohensalzburg. Felt really happy with their help and service. more »
I was here before 4 years with my family and this time with friends, can't get enough of it. Enjoying the walking, watching the small fountains, flowers, catching the squirrel jumping between trees..... more »
TL/DR: this place is not for me or for small kids, but if you like palaces and history, then it might worth a visit. This palace was a disappointment for us. We choose this because my kids like fountains so we thought the tour will be great for them. Unfortunately it wasn't, because it was not about watching beautiful fountain show. Instead, the "entertainment" is that the guide splashes water from hidden tubes to the visitors. We found it really annoying, even the children hated it. The second part of the program is to visit the palace with the provided audio guide. If you're into history maybe you will like it, but we didn't. All that I remember is that there was an arrogant bishop who forced everyone to work for them, and ruined their life just for fun. I felt sorry for everyone who had to live with him. The castle is well maintained and the visit is free with Salzburg card. Guided tours starts about three times an hour. Parking is for fee next to the entrance, but there are some free parking places halfway between the palace and the zoo, next to the road.
Water features are interesting and fun. Beautiful gardens which are free to enter. Would be the ideal place for a family picnic as children's parks are also here. Cafe's are also at the house
Don't miss this pretty and funny little piece of history. Very scenic gardens for a stroll or just to relax after a long day on foot ! The trick fountains were really fun ! Our little boy loved it. The palace interiors were lovely too. Trivia - not a single night has been spent at this place since it was built !
Beautiful grounds. If you are a Sound of Music fan then worth a visit to see famous gazebo . The house is where they filmed end of the film as their marital home. The water feature s here are really worth a visit. Not ideal for young families.
You can join a tour through the fountains that closes at one of the entrances to the park surrounding the palace, and still, you can enjoy the palace museum anytime after. All with a single ticket. I'm fast but it was 3+ hours for me.
